You Go To My Head
Denise Jannah Lyrics

And you linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning round in my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne
You go to my head
Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
The thrill of the thought
That you might give a thought to my plea, cast a spell over me
Still I say to myself get a hold of yourself
Can't you see that it never can be?
You go to my head
With a smile that makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand July's
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance
You go to my head
You go to my head
Denise Jannah's "You Go To My Head" is a jazzy love song that captures the essence of infatuation. From the opening lines, "You go to my head / And you linger like a haunting refrain," the singer exemplifies how the one they love has a powerful hold over their thoughts and emotions. The metaphor of champagne bubbles spinning around in one's head and the comparison of the loved one to a "sparkling burgundy brew" add to the intoxicating effect that this person has on the singer's mind.
The singer acknowledges that they are captivated by the possibility of the loved one reciprocating their feelings, even though they know that the romance is unlikely to happen. The singer tries to remind themselves to "get a hold of" their feelings, but the lure of the loved one is too potent. The smile and eyes of this person create a physical and emotional reaction in the singer, and their soul is "intoxicated" by their presence. Despite the singer acknowledging that "this heart of mine / hasn't a ghost of a chance in this crazy romance," they still cannot help but allow themselves to be consumed by the allure of this person who "goes to [their] head."
Overall, Jannah's interpretation of this song highlights the undeniable power that infatuation can have over the mind and body. The use of various metaphors such as the champagne bubbles and the summer with a thousand Julys contribute to the overall theme of being swept away by intense emotions.
