Desert Moon
Dennis De Young Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

"Is this the train to Desert Moon?" was all she said
but I knew I'd heard that stranger's voice before.
I turned to look into her eyes, but she moved away
She was standing in the rain
Trying hard to speak my name
They say first love never runs dry

The waiter poured our memories in a tiny cup
We stumbled over words we longed to hear
We talked about the dreams we'd lost, or given up
When the whistle caught the night
And shook silence from my life
As the last train rolled toward the moon

Those summer nights
When we were young
We bragged of things
We'd never done
We were dreamers, only dreamers
And in our haste
To grow up too soon
We left our innocence on Desert Moon
We were dreamers, only dreamers
On Desert Moon
On Desert Moon
On Desert Moon
Desert Moon

I still can hear the whisper of the summer nights
It echoes in the corners of my heart
The night we stood waiting for the desert train
All the words we meant to say
All the chances swept away
Still remain on the road to undo

Those summer nights, when we were young
We bragged of things we'd never done
We were dreamers, only dreamers
Moments pass, and time moves on
But dreams remain for just as long as there's dreamers
All the dreamers

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dennis DeYoung's "Desert Moon" convey a sense of longing and nostalgia for lost love and lost dreams while evoking a sense of romanticism and nostalgia. The song is a ballad that tells the story of a chance encounter on a train with a former lover who he never expected to see again. The singer hears a stranger's voice on the train asking if it's the train to Desert Moon, a phrase he had heard from the woman he loved.

He turns to look into her eyes, hoping to rekindle their relationship. However, she moves away from him, leaving him to remember their past with regret. They visit a cafƩ, where they reminisce about their past dreams, all of which have been abandoned. As the train whistle blows and rolls toward the moon, he reflects on how their youth and innocence were lost so soon, leaving only dreams and regrets that can never be fully remembered, relived, or realized.

I'm 49 years old now and I got into American Football šŸˆ during the mid eighties,I didn't get into Dennis Deyoung or his band STYX untill 1990. I guess it had something to do with living here in Northern Ireland. May I ask, are you still American Football šŸˆ fan and if so what NFL football are you a fan of? I'm a massive San Francisco 49ers fan and I've seen them twice at Wembley stadium London England.

@Barry David So what's your definition of the early 80s? For me, early 80-84, mid 85, and 86-89 late 80s. How about yours? Also, I don't understand why your comment is like this? Do you have Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder and are very particular with dates? Or you just want to degrade someone?
