Lover
Dennis Hayward and His Orchestra Lyrics

How gentle is the rain, that falls softly on the meadow;
Birds high upon the trees serenade the flow'rs with their melodies.
Oh, see there beyond the hill, the bright colors of the rainbow;
Some magic from above made this day for us, just to fall in love.

How gentle is the rain, that falls gently on the meadow;
Birds high upon the trees serenade the flow'rs with their melodies.
Oh, see there beyond the hill, the bright colors of the rainbow;
Some magic from above made this day for us, just to fall in love.

You'll hold me in your arms, and say once again you love me;
And if your love is true, ev'rything will be just as wonderful.

You'll hold me in your arms, and say once again you love me;

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Lover" by Dennis Hayward and His Orchestra depict the intense passion and desire of a lover for their significant other. The opening lines "Lover, when I'm near you, and I hear you - speak my name" convey the excitement and joy that the lover feels upon hearing the voice of their loved one. The following lines "Softly, in my ear you - breathe a flame" symbolize the intense emotions that the lover experiences when in the presence of their beloved.

The lyrics then progress towards the conflict and struggle that the lover experiences due to their conscience. They acknowledge that their relationship is immoral, but ultimately decide not to quarrel with their bliss as their desire to be with each other is too strong. The phrase "two lips of coral - want to kiss" is an allusion to the beauty of the lover's lips and the desire to kiss them.

The lyrics continue with the internal conflict that the lover faces in trying to resist their significant other. The line "I say (that) the devil is in you, and to resists you - I try" reflects the idea of temptation and the struggle to resist it. The final lines of the song "Lover, please be tender, when you're tender - fears depart. Lover, I surrender - to my heart" depict the acceptance of the lover to follow their heart's desire and surrender to their emotions.
