Blending dreamy soundscapes, ambient pop, and shoegaze elements, the sound is defined by Mason’s wistful vocals and a fascination with film soundtracks. Originally formed as a studio project with producer/bassist Russ Hayes, their music has evolved from the subtly arranged ‘Wolf River’ EP to the more ambitious and cinematic crescendos heard in the 2014 album Scarlet Sleep and 2016's Frozen Lake EP.
These releases received support within the Welsh music scene and airplay from BBC Radio stations, leading to support slots with the likes of Manic Street Preachers and The Joy Formidable. 2019 saw the release of the single Lucid - a shimmering tapestry of dreamy indie-pop and summer nostalgia.
Latest album "Through Life" is a dreampop love letter to Japan, released in 2021.
It's You
Denuo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Turns the only light on
To see
Sometimes
It’s you always on my mind
Always an island
A clear warm night
I never thought I would stay long
But I know it’s right
When you go, I’ll hold on to the feeling inside
I just need time to breathe
Just need to slow down
It’s you always, all the time
A mirror vision
Your hand in mine
And now you’re lying in the park on a Sunday morning
I just need time to breathe
Say it all
No silence
I want to feel
You say
“I know, I tried. Why won’t you see?”
In the opening lines of Denuo's "It's You," the singer asserts that it is only through truth that their eyes are opened, and that this truth is the only source of light. The implication is that the singer has been living in darkness, unaware of something important, but now sees things clearly because of an encounter with this truth. Yet, despite this newfound clarity, the singer admits that they still can't shake the thought of someone, referred to only as "It's You," who always remains on their mind. The sense of connection described in the song is complex, with the person being both an island (isolated in some way) and a mirror image of the singer (holding their hand as if they're reflecting one another). The lyrics suggest that the relationship may be tenuous in some way, with the singer admitting that they never expected to stay long and that they feel like they're "treading water." Nevertheless, the singer also admits that they know it's right, and that when the other person is gone, they will hold onto the "feeling inside."
This song explores the many layers of romantic relationships, with the singer wrestling with their desires and fears. Despite the fear of vulnerability and the instability of their relationship, they can't seem to let go of this person who haunts their thoughts. They want to take a step back to catch their breath, to slow down and make sense of their feelings, even as they struggle to articulate those feelings aloud. In the end, the singer wants to be honest and candid, to communicate everything they are feeling in order to make sense of their connection with this other person.
