Same here. I have no reason either and only started listening to this recently. (Although I ofc know it from over the years hearing it on the radio etc.)
But for some reason it kept popping in my head of late and it is SO INCREDIBLY beautiful, it makes me feel so many feels just from the words and music.

I came from a broken home where I had an abusive father. At 14 I ran away from home, at 15 I was living on my own and struggling with life. I met a girl at 19 who seen something good in me and she told me she loved me. That was the first time in my life I had heard those words from someone. Needless to say I married her and this was our wedding song. I'm pretty sure she saved my life and gave me inspiration to want better and for that I will always be thankful! I'm a grampa now with 2 kids and 5 grandkids and they are loved!

My single mother raised 5 kids in the 70s after my father walked out. 2-3 jobs at once to provide for us. This is one of the songs she would listen to and sob. She just wanted to be loved but very hard with 5 kids. She passed in 1992 after she just finally found a man who loved her for her. This song makes me cry for her. She did an amazing job. 💔🥲. PS Mom…Thank you for taking such good care of us. We love you forever.

I had an arranged narriage at 29. Did not want it but my mother was getting sicker and I was the eldest boy in the family. Duty and responsibility and all that in my culture/religion. Now older and wiser, all that was BS really. My mother was not that sick, physically at least. Mentally, well ... that will be a book.

Marriage lasted six weeks. Bitter taste. Unless I could find the one whom I respected and could have a laugh with, marriage/relationship was not a possibility. In my prayers I added "... she better be good looking". I compromised "bigly" in my first marriage. It was more of a joke between myself and you know who.

By age 42/43, prayers were about letting go. The prospect of a single life beckoned. I would not have believed it if it did not happen to me. Something occured when I let go. Long story short. Met someone halfway across the world. Long distance relationship for 18 months before I met her physically. No video calls during those days, pre-Skype or WhatsApp. Day 1 met her for lunch. Day 2 spent the whole day with her. Day 3 went shopping with her and her mother. Oh, look there is a mosque next to the market. What do you say? Married now 18 years. The joke was taken seriously by you know who. She was and is a babe. Unbelievable, but true. The marriage is like any other marriage/relationship, that is lots of hard work. The key items are present though, respect and laughter.

So, you never know what might happen tomorrow. Meanwhile, live your life.

I played it for my friend Mildred. She's almost 90, and has dementia. I'm her in home caregiver. I don't think I've ever heard her sing. But when I played this song she started singing to it. It was amazing!
We are blessed that music stays with us for so long. She would have been in her 40's when this song was a top ten hit. I'm going to play her music more often.

Julia, Your post about your friend Mildred intrigued me enough to write a reply. I don’t think that I have ever written a response, so something about it moved me. Reminded me of that scene in the Pixar Disney movie Coco where the little boy plays a sound for his grandmother with dementia and it brings about a happiness as she surprisingly begins singing the words of the song to everyone’s amazement. You have tapped into something that may help her or at least bring possibly other memories back and activate pathways in her brain that need doses of rejuvenation. She obviously liked John Denver and particularly that song for her to recall the lyrics; so ingrained in her that ever severe dementia could not conquer it. I’m not sure of your age, but as you may know back then records were released as LP vinyl or at times singles. She either heard it over the radio so many times that she knew it by heart or there is a very good chance that she bought the original record album it was released on (Back Home Again) or the single (Annie’s Song). Though there is also a good possibility she just bought the John Denver’s Greatest Hits album that came out during the 8-track tape era (certainly dating myself here). If you are willing, rather than just playing her random songs you may want to try this for you’ve cracked the door open a bit and feel you may even get your foot further in: Possibly find the albums “Back Home Again” and “John Denver’s Greatest Hits” (cover holding brown hat on head with green backdrop). Play her songs from these albums. If you really want to know if this was her favorite then see where Annie’s song was positioned in the album and you may find she knows the lyrics and might sing along to the song that came immediately after Annie’s Song for these originally came out on vinyl as either the album LP or a “45” if she bought the single. It would be interesting if she starts improving her cognition for it may bring back other brain functions for you’re working/exercising pathways that need it. I would choose a time in the day where she seems most lucid if you know it and start there. Show her a picture of the album covers as you play it for she likely had one of them and look at her eyes as you do it and see if you notice anything like a bit of reflection or expression. The visual and sound senses coming together may initiate a stronger memory. As a long shot, you will likely be able to tell if she bought the “45 single” if you can find an internet version of JD’s song “Cool An’ Green An’ Shady” which apparently was on the B side of the 45 single. If you play it and she starts singing the lyrics to that song then she bought the single. Sorry for the length of response. Just thinking there may be a remote chance my thoughts may do something good for someone that deserves it. Tom

@@DrSanGiovanni I'm 50, so I definitely grew up with 45 singles, and albums. And I agree that it actually may be useful as a therapeutic tool. They use music quite often in occupational therapy.
People with dementia begin to lose language skills, and even the ability to follow a storyline. I've found that as the disease progresses they start to lose interest in things like having stories read to them, or even watching a television program.
But the ability to enjoy MUSIC never seems to leave them. My granny died at 96. In that last year she didn't want the tv on. But she wanted her music on.
Thank you for your suggestions. I'll let you know more as I try those different things you mentioned.

Julia, this was one of my Aunt Margaret's favorite songs. This song was played at her funeral. She has gone home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ now. I miss her dearly. Everytime I here this song I can't help but think of her. I was just a baby when this song came out. I know every word to it. God bless Mildred. It's so sweet that she is singing this song. This music is definitely therapeutic for her and can bring back some wonderful memories of her youth.

Annie's song was played at my wedding in 1975. We had what I thought was a great marriage, but after 25 years we drifted apart. "Let me die in your arms" was written for Annie about Annie and to Annie...but their marriage ended in divorce. I think that may be the saddest thing about this song, that so many of us start out in one place, but wind up in another. I fight tears whenever I hear Annie's Song.

I was 15 when this song was released and imagined that one day I would marry somone who would make me feel this way..... 42 years later, my husband died in my arms and the arms of his 3 sons. When my grandfather passed away, I inherited one of his old cars. When I started it up for the first time after his funeral, this was the song that began to play from the CD player. I immediately began to bawl my eyes out before I could even put it into drive. My grandfather used to sing & play John Denver songs on his acoustic guitar whenever I would come to visit. It was as if it was his final goodbye that day, and it was such a beautiful experience that words can not fully convey. I had that CD on repeat for months and months afterward. And I was never a big John Denver fan before, but I became a huge fan from that day forward. RIP John & Granddaddy, keep on jammin' til we meet again.
