1) London four-piece alternative rock band, formed in 1988.
2) Christchurch, New Zealand downbeat/jazz band, led by Oakley Grenell aka O.G.
The London four-piece Departure Lounge has been composing their own brand of alternative rock since the late '90s. Frontman Tim Keegan, who used to play guitar with Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians, formed Departure Lounge with guitarist Chris Anderson, percussionist Lindsay Jamieson, and bassist Jake Kyle. The band released their debut Out of There, with Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins) in the production seat, in spring 2000. In 2001, the band traveled from their native England to the Bible belt for some musical mayhem. There, Departure Lounge began a bi-weekly stint at Nashville's Slow Bar. This turned into a six month run and musicians like singer/songwriter Josh Rouse, Lambchop, John Painter, and Bob Dylan's steel player Bucky Baxter joined the band on stage. Shortly thereafter, they inked a deal with Nettwerk America and worked with Kid Loco for their proper sophomore effort Too Late to Die Young. This particular album, which was issued in spring 2002, showcased Departure Lounge's space rock ambience and gritty guitars for something typically indie.

This must be the feeling I did will
Up here where the cradle rocks the night
Hold it in my hand
Feel it in my heart
The twilight in your eye
Tells me I'm alone
I'm alone
I'm alone
I'm alone
Steer between the parting clouds that call
Wait for all the shooting stars to fall
Quiver in voice
Tears on my shirt
Too much to say
No more than words
I'm alone
I'm alone
I'm alone
I'm alone
And no one will be watching
Because no one wants to know
And if I had three wishes
Which way would you go?
I'm alone
I'm alone
I'm alone
I'm alone
The lyrics to Departure Lounge's song "Alone Again" poignantly convey the feelings of isolation and loneliness that we can experience even when surrounded by beauty and wonder. The opening lines "High over the hills to fly, and still/This must be the feeling I did will" suggest a sense of control and intentionality in the act of flying, but also a recognition that even in achieving one's goals, there can be a sense of emptiness. The following lines "Up here where the cradle rocks the night/Hold it in my hand/Feel it in my heart/The twilight in your eye/Tells me I'm alone" paint a picture of an awe-inspiring vista, but also a sense of disconnection from others. The central refrain of "I'm alone" is repeated frequently, driving home the sense of solitude and separation.
The second verse builds on this feeling of isolation, with the singer describing "Steer(ing) between the parting clouds that call/Wait(ing) for all the shooting stars to fall." The beauty of the natural world is juxtaposed with the profound sadness and vulnerability of the human experience. The lines "Quiver in voice/Tears on my shirt/Too much to say/No more than words" convey the difficulty in expressing oneself fully in the face of overwhelming emotion. The final lines of the song "And no one will be watching/Because no one wants to know/And if I had three wishes/Which way would you go?" speak to a sense of resignation and hopelessness, with no clear path forward.
Overall, "Alone Again" is a powerful meditation on what it means to feel truly alone, despite being surrounded by breathtaking scenery and natural wonder. The repetition of the central refrain and the poignant imagery serve to drive home the profound emotions contained within the song.
