According to Songfacts, lead singer Dave Gahan once said in publicity materials:
I wanted to take it away from being a straight, with a feel beneath it that was kind of My Bloody Valentine or Jesus and Mary Chain. A big lush sound with this droning wall of noise underneath. Martin did some fantastic backing vocals for that.

I'll be waiting patiently
Come back, come back to me
I'll be waiting here patiently
Walking a thin white line
Between love and hate
Wasting all my time in another world
I could use a little company
A little kindness can go a long way
Weeks turn into months
Months turn into years
Reaching the same conclusions
Gathering up the fear
Come back, come back to me
I'll be waiting patiently
Come back, come back to me
I'll be waiting here patiently
A light will always shine in the heart of you
In truth and in reality, only blindness can hide it away
I could use a little restraint
A little kindness can go a long way
Weeks turn into months
Months turn into years
Reaching the same conclusions
Gathering up the fear
You're living the same delusions
Gathering up the fear
Gathering up the fear
Gathering up the fear
Gathering up the fear
Come back
Come back
Come back
Come back
Come back
In "Come Back" by Depeche Mode, the singer sings about waiting patiently for someone to return to him. He is stuck in a limbo between love and hate and feels that he is wasting his time in another world. He yearns for company and kindness which he believes can go a long way in his healing. As weeks turn into months and months turn into years, he reaches the same conclusions but gathers up the fear. He knows that there is always a light that shines in his heart but only blindness can hide it away.
The song can be interpreted in several ways, but it seems to be about lost or unrequited love. The singer may have been left or broken up with someone, and he is struggling to move on. He is waiting for that person to come back to him, and he hopes that they will be kind and understanding when they do. The singer knows that there is always hope, and he is willing to wait for as long as it takes. However, he is also aware that time is passing him by, and he is just accumulating more fear and pain while he waits.
