Enjoy The Silence-Reinterpreted
Depeche Mode Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can't you understand?
Oh my little girl
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm
All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Enjoy the silence

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Enjoy the Silence" by Depeche Mode depict a love that is strong beyond the need for words. The opening lines, "Words like violence, break the silence, come crashing in into my little world," convey how words can be overwhelming and hurtful. The person singing talks directly to a lover, expressing how it is "painful" when they speak too much. The repetition of "oh my little girl" throughout the song creates a sense of intimacy between the two lovers, emphasizing the need for physical connection.

The chorus, "All I ever wanted, all I ever needed, is here in my arms, words are very unnecessary, they can only do harm," emphasizes the theme of physical touch and the idea that words are not necessary for deep connections. It’s a plea for non-verbal communication. In contrast, the second verse speaks to the transitory nature of words and vows. The singer believes that feelings are intense and real, but promises to feel them forever is brittle.

Overall, the song “Enjoy the Silence” is a testament to the power of silence and touch, portraying how silence can be louder than words in conveying emotions. The song speaks to the idea that speech isn't always the best method of communication, and sometimes intimacy can be more powerful than words.

A confession: I listened to this song/remix hundreds of times since it was released in 2004 and honestly? I never knew it was a Version by Mike Shinoda. In hindsight, it should've been obvious - so many LP elements in there. Well, that explains why I enjoy this song so much.

@hamit480

similarly many people confused to the man who sold the world as nirvana's own track.

Well Linkin Park were inspired by Depeche Mode.
