Depeche Mode Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here is a song from the wrong side of town
Where I'm bound to the ground by the loneliest sound
That pounds from within and is pinning me down

Here is a page from the emptiest stage
A cage or the heaviest cross ever made
A gauge of the deadliest trap ever laid
And I thank you for bringing me here
For showing me home
For singing these tears
Finally, I've found that I belong here

The heat and the sickliest sweet smelling sheets
That cling to the backs of my knees and my feet
Well I'm drowning in time to a desperate beat

And I thank you for bringing me here
For showing me home
For singing these tears
Finally, I've found that I belong

Feels like home
I should have known
From my first breath

God, send the only true friend I call mine
And pretend that I'll make amends the next time
Befriend the glorious end of the line

And I thank you for bringing me here
For showing me home

For singing these tears
Finally, I've found that I belong here

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Depeche Mode's song "Home" speak of a sense of loneliness, alienation, and despair felt by someone who is in a place that is not their true home. The song opens with the singer acknowledging that he is in a place that is not his own, where he is weighed down by an inner turmoil and a heavy feeling of isolation. He describes feeling trapped, as if he is held captive on an empty stage or fenced in by the heaviest cross.

The singer expresses a sense of gratitude to someone for bringing him to this place, for showing him that he can feel at home even in such an alien landscape. He describes the experience of drowning in time to a desperate beat, like a dream that he can't escape from.

As the song reaches its climax, the singer calls out to God, asking for a true friend and promising to make amends for past wrongs. He longs to reach the 'glorious end of the line,' suggesting that he sees this place as just another stop on his journey towards a greater understanding of himself and the world. Ultimately, he expresses his gratitude for being shown that he belongs here, even in this strange and lonely place.

"Ultra" is absolutely wonderful

@benstephenson8993

This shows the mastery of Martin, who wrote this song about his own demise and at the time, he literally believed he was going to kill himself. Despite all that, he had the presence of mind to still get it together to create such a beautiful song. Thankfully he turned himself around and we are lucky for it!

@PedroMiguel-if3ll

Where did you read that, or are you just making that up?

@benstephenson8993

@@PedroMiguel-if3ll I saw him discuss it in an interview. Why would I make that up?
