It Doesnt Matter Two
Depeche Mode Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As I lay here with you
The shame lies with us
We talk of love and trust
That doesn't matter

Though we may be the last in the world
We feel like pioneers
Telling hopes and fears
To one another

And, oh, what a feeling inside of me
It might last for an hour
Wounds aren't healing inside of me
Though it feels good now
I know it's only for now

The feeling is intense
You grip me with your eyes

And then I realise
It doesn't matter

Overall Meaning

In Depeche Mode's song "It Doesn't Matter", the lyrics describe a complex emotional situation between two individuals who are physically intimate with each other, yet feel a sense of shame and detachment. They try to talk about love and trust, but these ideals seem irrelevant and useless in the face of their own personal struggles. The two people in the song feel like "pioneers" in the world, as if they are the only ones who truly understand their situation. They are able to share their hopes and fears with each other, but even this emotional connection feels fleeting and temporary.

The chorus of the song emphasizes the intensity of the physical and emotional connection between the two individuals, while also acknowledging that this connection is ultimately meaningless. The feeling inside of the singer is intense and powerful, but he knows that it will only last for a short time. The wounds inside of him are not healed by this connection, even though it feels good in the moment. The final line of the chorus - "It doesn't matter" - is a poignant expression of the sense of futility that the two individuals feel, as if they are doomed to experience this pattern of detachment and short-lived connection over and over again.

Woke up today with this song in my head and listened to it for 3-4 times! LOVE the lyrics, reminding me of my teenage love-life... messy! 😄 Can't wait to watch them again live next week Friday in Budapest, the 2nd time this year! DM FOREVER!❤

I have to say Martin is the best song writer in the world. Amazing lyrics

@theadventuresofsupermom6343

Yeah, and you've heard every single songwriter in the world.

@joelashadali

He definitely was at one point in time. They are my favorite band since that first time I heard them in college radio in 81...I was 16. That being said I don't think you can compare his writing from after playing the angel onward to the older period. And it's not his fault we all get older and change. The subject matter we draw from changes. It's just natural. And sadly I really think he dropped off. Anyway after 1000s of listens to the older library I'm beginning to think and rank Black Celebration as my #1 favorite album. There just isn't a bad song and love it being Martin heavy

@Shyyrn

One of Martin's best vocals, in my opinion. The middle portion with the vocal harmony is AMAZING.
