Little 15
Depeche Mode Lyrics
Little fifteen
You help her forget
The world outside
You're not part of it yet
And if you could drive
You could drive her away
To a happier place
To a happier day
That exists in your mind
And in your smile
Just for a while
Little fifteen
Little fifteen
Why take the smooth with the rough
When things run smooth
It's already more than enough
She knows your mind
Is not yet in league
With the rest of the world
And its little intrigues
Do you understand
Do you know what she means
As time goes by
And when you've seen what she's seen
You will
Little fifteen
Little fifteen
Why does she have to defend
Her feelings inside
Why pretend
She's not had a life
A life of near misses
Now all that she wants
Is three little wishes
She wants to see with your eyes
She wants to smile with your smile
She wants a nice surprise
Every once in a while
She wants to see with your eyes
She wants to smile with your smile
She wants a nice surprise
Every once in a while
Little fifteen

The band name is derived from a French fashion magazine, Dépêche mode, which means "fashion dispatch."
The band have been highly influential in the electronic dance music scene, especially synthpop, techno and trance, in part due to their innovative work, recording techniques and use of sampling. Their most successful album is arguably 1990's Violator, which reached the #2 position in the UK, #7 in the US, and sold over 8 million copies worldwide. The band has released a long series of high-charting singles over their three-decades long career. Enjoy the Silence is their most recognized song and is one of the most covered songs in history.
The original line-up was Dave Gahan, Martin L. Gore, Andy Fletcher and Vince Clarke. In December 1981, Clarke left the band and later went on to form Yazoo, The Assembly and Erasure. Alan Wilder joined the group initially in January 1982 as a live keyboardist but became an official member in December 1982. He left mid-1995 to fully concentrate on his Recoil project and the band continued as a trio. In 2010 Wilder re-joined Depeche Mode on stage after 16 years, for a performance of Somebody during a show at London's Royal Albert Hall in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Depeche Mode's origins date back to 1977, when Vince Clarke and Andrew Fletcher formed a band called No Romance in China, with Clarke on vocals and guitar and Fletcher on bass. In March 1980, Clarke, Gore and Fletcher formed a band called Composition of Sound, with Clarke on vocals/guitar, Gore on keyboards and Fletcher on bass. Soon after the formation of Composition of Sound, Clarke and Fletcher switched to synthesizers. Dave Gahan joined the band in 1980 after Clarke heard him perform at a local scout hut jam session, singing to a rendition of David Bowie's "Heroes", and Depeche Mode were born.
While playing a live gig at the Bridge House in Canning Town, the band were approached by Daniel Miller, the founder of Mute Records, who proposed them a verbal contract. The result was their first single Dreaming of Me, recorded in December 1980 and released in February 1981, reaching number 57 in the UK charts and followed soon by a real contract with Mute.
To date, Depeche Mode have released:
14 studio albums: Speak & Spell (1981), A Broken Frame (1982), Construction Time Again (1983), Some Great Reward (1984), Black Celebration (1986), Music For the Masses (1987), Violator (1990), Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993), Ultra (1997), Exciter (2001), Playing the Angel (2005), Sounds of the Universe (2009), Delta Machine (2013) and Spirit (2017);

MEDVE1978
I think it is about a 15 year old boy having an affair with an adult (and older, maybe 30-40 year old woman). The woman has a crush on him and his mother / father is telling him what the situation is and wants to hinder the relationship.
1. In the first verse he helps her forget the world. Because love and passion let you forget the world. People with a much younger lover think more fresh, youthful, such a relationship brings new fire.
2. The second verse is about escaping. If he was an adult, but still very young he could drive her away and satisfy her.
3. The first verse is again about him being the youthful satisfaction, the sweet love. The older woman would escape and submerge in his power, energy, innocence.
4. In the fourth verse he is warned to proceed lightly, do not take the smooth with the rough, the smooth is enough. The rough is the affair with the older woman.
5. In the fifth verse it is told that the woman knows how the world works, can use the little tricks on him, while he is an inexeperienced teenager.
6. In the sixth verse we see that the woman wants him, wants to be with him, but this is not an appropriate relationship because it is uneven. The women will exploit him emotionally like someone who did the same to her and then he will know what such a relationship means.
7. The last 3 verses are the saddest and most important:
- the woman wants just what everyone wants to be loved. The age gap between the two is to high, but it is natural for her to like the boy and wanting to be with him. So she has no reason to hide her feelings;
- her life was tragic, she doesn't have a relationship (life of near misses) and she is older and alone;
- the woman really wants her youth back, when she did not have all the trauma of her life. She hopes to get that feeling back through being in love with the boy (see with -the world - your eyes, smile with your smile, and a nice suprise > all these things point to childhood and being a teenager. Kids experience a new world, fall first time in love, have sex for the first time, get suprised by the beauty or excitement of something. After you grow up you never can get this blessfull naivity back, it is gone.

I'm 46 and I've been listening to DM since I was 15.
I never got to to see them in concert because it was canceled last minute.
Thank God I got to see The Cure.
I think it is amazing that you opened your minds enough to enjoy what was passed down to you by your parents. I could never get my 22 yr old daughter interested. Trust me I tried.
Even though it's been 30 years, it doesn't take long to take me back. I can still feel it in my heart to this day.
I'm so glad I didn't have to grow up on Mumble rap.

Today is December 26th, 2020. At the beginning I only knew "enjoy the silence" thanks to my father, last month I started to listen to other depeche mode's music and now I am addicted to ! Yesterday I celebrated my 15th birthday and I am glad to have come across their music which has nothing to do with today's music. Thank you depeche mode, I love you !

And so it begins....

I got to know this song soon after it was released in '87. I was 15 at the time. Today I am 49. These days, out of nostalgia, after a really long time I listened to it again, and it made me travel in time! Few of the music has this power over me, but Depeche Mode and some of their songs are indeed this effect. He really has everything he ascended from the depths ...

Their music will give you a lifetime of feels - good, bad, sad, evil, angelic, hopeful, resigned - all of it.
