The band released only one studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. The album went on to receive critical acclaim, but initially faltered in sales and in radio airplay. Although released in 1970 it was not until March 1972 that the album's single "Layla" (a tale of unrequited love inspired by Clapton's relationship with his friend George Harrison's wife, Pattie Boyd) made the top ten in both the United States and the United Kingdom. The album, which has received praise from critics and fans alike, is often considered to be the defining achievement of Clapton's career. Layla featured slide guitar from guest guitarist Duane Allman, who contributed lead, rhythm or slide guitar on most of the cuts on the album.
Little Wing
Derek & The Dominos Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With a circus mind that's running 'round.
Butterflies and zebras, fairy tales,
That's all she ever thinks about.
When I'm sad she comes to me
With a thousand smiles she gives to me free.
Said, "It's all right, take anything you want,
Well she's walking through the clouds
With a circus mind that's running 'round.
Butterflies and zebras, fairy tales,
That's all she ever thinks about.
When I'm sad she comes to me
With a thousand smiles she gives to me free.
Said, "It's all right, take anything you want,
Anything you want, anything."
Fly on, little wing.
The lyrics of the song Little Wing by Derek & The Dominos paints a picture of a young girl who is living in her own world of fantasy and imagination. She is compared to a circus performer with a mind that's constantly wandering and dreaming of fairy tales, butterflies and zebras. The girl appears to have a carefree spirit and an optimistic outlook on life, and her very presence seems like the antidote to sadness. When the singer is feeling sad, she comes to him with a thousand smiles, and reassures him that he can take anything he wants. The chorus closes with the phrase "Fly on, little wing," a suggestion of the girl's free spirit and the hope that she can continue to soar without any limits.
The song's lyrics are rich in metaphors and imagery. The girl's "circus mind" evokes the concept of juggling multiple thoughts and ideas at once, while "walking through the clouds" symbolizes her detachment from reality and her ability to soar above it all. The butterflies and zebras, often associated with innocence and whimsy, also convey a sense of unreality and joyful abandon. The singer represents a contrasting force, the pragmatic and grounded one who longs for the freedom and imagination that the girl embodies.

Crying guitars ... An ode to Hendrix... What a great LP... I bought it in 1970, the same year I saw the Allman Brothers with brother Duane... Music this good never grows old...

I got a vinyl copy of Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs as one of my 18th birthday gifts from my parents on 1/21/1971. They asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and Layla was my only request.

Credit to Jimi Hendrix for this wonderful composition!
I have heard this song done so many ways and it has always been great whether it is electric, acoustic, or in this case Clapton and Duane Allman. I just wish they included the guitar intro on this version..

Eric and Bobby's vocals....incredible
@LeeEisenstein
Absolutely. Bobby's accompanying vocals blew me away from the first time I heard this. To my ears, he was a huge part of their sound, especially the back and forth he and Eric did.
