Derek became a world champion in Latin American Dance and joined the cast of Dancing With the Stars in season 5. He has been a professonal dancer and choreographer on the show through season 10, and took home the trophy in season 7 with host and model Brooke Burke. Derek formed a band with fellow dancer and best friend, Mark Ballas, called Almost Amy while in London and they grew up together playing music. In 2008, the band was renamed to Ballas Hough Band and their first album was released under Hollywood Records in early 2009.

Hi, I am a suicide “survivor” and I emphasize survivor, because once we come thru, we must still learn to live, love and be happy. I had no idea I had a disorder (I like that better than illness 😊) like millions of others. We are taught how eat right, exercise, listen to our body, get physicals; but nothing about our mental health. Just imagine if every doctor took 5 minutes to ask just a few questions about our mental health. Soon, it would be as simple as talking about every other medical issues.. I loved your video! It is so hard to hold on..but if a hand reaches for us, the fall doesn’t hurt quite as bad.

What you said about doctor' spending five minutes to speak about such things is crucial. The biggest reason that many of us continue to struggle is because no one took the time to explain to us that this is not a 'problem' but a medical condition just like any other. 5 minutes, just like taking a blood pressure. For all you doctors out there reading this....5 MINUTES. Help us when we are young to realize this is something we can openly discuss with our doctors WITHOUT being ashamed of it.

I'm not afraid of death, I feel peace when I think about it. Can't explain that feeling. I think about it a lot and I don't know why. Ugh. My brain has so many thoughts running thru it and I can't shut them out. I feel pain all the time but never show it always put on on a happy face

I still have to fight everyday. Talk to someone please. Everyone's situation is different, but there is help out there. It's not easy at all, but worth everything.

Thank you Derek. My neighbors mom hung herself a month ago and my boyfriend helped the body get down.. I didnt know them really but introduced myself to the daughter afterwards. Community is important. We all have purpose whether we recognize it or not. Say hi to your neighbors when they're walking their dogs, even if they never say hi back. Reach out to your friends. Dont tell people to not feel a certain way. It's okay to have emotions, even the bad ones. They are how we learn and experience life. But like the song says, hold on pain ends. I am 26 years old have been in the hospital twice at 19 and 22 for suicide but I never will again. I have learned how to cope, and that I have purpose and so much to give. Exercise, meditate, breathe, be in the moment. Return to the natural state of bliss we all deserve

I was suicidal in high school and college. I didn't feel anyone loved me. I cried out to God to intervene in my life because I just didn't want to live. And He did in several powerful ways. I knew He was real and had a purpose for my life so I gave my heart to Him and accepted His Son, Jesus Christ as my Savior. I knew for the first time how much I was really loved when I knew what Christ had done for me on the cross. I've been living for Him ever since.

Depression is so horriffic, the altered brain chemicals makes my brain believe evil lies. It encourages me to isolate myself from the very friends & activities that help me feel better.
I'm grateful that after months of struggling & suffering I found a great Dr who got me the medication I needed to fix the chemistry in my brain.

I was always a fun person .
I write songs I sing I paint and many other things . They come naturally to me .

I almost succeeded once, and that's when ALL THESE PEOPLE told me I have so much to live for and that so many people would need me. My reply? Where were they when I needed someone to listen??? Everyone expected me to just drop everything, listen to THEIR problems then fart rainbows, glitter, and unicorns. We both know that isn't real.
I still struggle every hour of every day ... but I'm still here.
I'm not going to tell you it's going to get better, it won't. I WILL tell you this - you matter. You may not even know how much but there is at least one person who would be devastated if you go.
Life still chews me up and spits me out but I choose not to give in but to go on.

Over the last three years I have battled prescription pill addiction. It got really bad! With the withdrawals and depression, I almost left my family which is now unthinkable to me. My family and I are a very tight unit. I would close myself off and when things got really bad and I kept thinking why am I trying so hard to fight it. I know I’m going to make myself sound like just another crazy fan, but watching you dance or listening to this song got me through some really bad days. One day at a time!! Now I am eight months clean, I have my mind back and my family is stronger than ever. My daughter got me an early Mother’s Day gift and now I get to go watch you at the Fox Theatre tonight! I can’t promise the emotion won’t get to me. Lol I seem to be an emotional being these days. But it’s better than feeling nothing and being in that black void. So I am saying thank you!! I am speechless Derek. It opens such a deep wound since my brother committed suicide. It has changed my life so profoundly. I wish I knew how I could have helped him. He kept all his pain hidden from his family. I know people are struggling and they feel they can't go on. But the loved ones left behind are left with such a huge hole in their hearts. It's so difficult to accept. We were left with such guilt because we should have seen how unhappy he was. We don't know why he felt that was the only way. It just breaks my heart. Thank you Derek for your caring heart; your ability to reach out and help others; and inspiring us every day to remember that the secret to living is giving. Hey, Linzey. I don't know you, but I just want to say that it's not you or your family's fault that your brother committed suicide. I planned my own suicide several years ago and almost went through with it. I hesitate to speak for your brother, but when I was in that state of mind, I felt like I was in a deep, dark tunnel with no light in sight. Death seemed like a rest and a relief. My family had no idea what I was going through because I was very good at wearing a happy "everything's fine" mask. So there is no way that your family could have known how unhappy he was if he was as adept as I was at pretending. My problems felt insurmountable and there is nothing that anyone could have said to make me feel differently. In the end I chickened out and asked for help. It's only through counseling and medication that things slowly got better. Please know that your brother's suicide had nothing to do with you guys and everything to do with him and how hopeless he must have felt. I'm sure that he knew that you guys loved him. I pray that you and your family are able to find some measure of peace someday.

Thanks Derek for that video, I've been depressed all my life, and have tried committing suicide multiple times, I thank God for the people around me everyday. I've lost both my brother and sister to suicide all because our family didn''t want to talk about it with them. Thank you again. Be blessed!!!!!

WOW. What a powerful demonstration of both pain and purpose by Derek Hough. How wonderful he's using his incredible gifts to encourage others. Those who believe in a personal God, also know there is a personal Satan, a.k.a. the father of lies, who is constantly feeding lies of hopelessness, unworthiness, and despair into the minds of people. Derek, I was with you at a Tony Robbins event when you spoke and rededicated your life to the Lord. Remember the young man who was injured by the "Batman Shooting" and the gal took the mic from him??? Crazy. It was such an insanely emotional time. I sat not far from you and I was in awe of the love and grace that surrounded you all. All I can say is how proud I am of this piece.
