Dermis Tatu's song El Hoyo speaks about finding a place to belong, even if it means digging your own hole or returning to your own hole. The first verse alludes to a struggle to find a place to fit in, with the singer saying they are constantly searching for a piece of ground to dig their own hole. However, they acknowledge that luck is not on their side, as there is no more room for one more hole. The imagery of worms twisting in empty stomachs and biting from the inside is a powerful metaphor for the hunger and desperation that drives the search for a place of belonging, full of sincere ideas.
The second verse is more confrontational, telling those who might oppose or criticize the idea of finding a personal niche to go back to their "hole" and keep their ideas to themselves. The repetition of the phrase "each one should go back to their hole, as if it were home" emphasizes the longing for a place to belong, a feeling of being so comfortable somewhere that you can call it home. The hostility towards those who dismiss the idea of finding a personal space hints at a lack of understanding that comes with not experiencing the same need for belonging.
Overall, El Hoyo is a poignant song that captures the universal desire for a sense of belonging and the frustration of societal norms that might not make it easy to find such a place.
