In 1994 the hit single "You Gotta Be" hit Billboard Top 5 and was a hit in the UK three times. It also allowed Des'ree to break into America. "You Gotta Be" was also a major hit in the United States, and it was featured in the movie The Next Karate Kid, starring Hilary Swank. The second song from Des'ree's second album, "Crazy Maze" featured in the movie Nothing to Lose. Coincidentally, her last album ("Dream Soldier") featured a song entitled "Nothing to Lose". Her song "Kissing You" featured on the 1996 Baz Luhrman movie "Romeo + Juliet" and is generally considered to be one of her greatest works and a showcase for her distinctive and impressive vocals.
In 1999, she won a Brit Award for the British Female Solo Artist category. Her 2003 release Dream Soldier was considerably less successful.

It's so unlike me, yes I know
But what am I to do with how I feel
I just keep on wondering, pondering what to d
I beat up on myself and everybody else, I'm so confused
You say let's compromise, head for the skies
Nothing to lose. I've got nothing to lose
So please don't leave me here. I'll be lost without you
Don't make me stay. 'cause I'll only be in the way
Don't say I told you so and that
My argument is wearing thin
Sometimes I'm ugly, beautiful
Say I'm hormonal and I'll punch you in
'Cause I just can't make up my mind any time
I'm not like you
Don't put words in my mouth
Or I'm heading south right on cue
You said let's compromise head for the skies
Nothing to lose. I've got nothing to lose
So please don't leave me here. I'll be lost without you
Don't make me stay. 'cause I'll only be in the way
Just can't make up my mind, anytime
I'm not like you
Don't put words in my mouth
Or I'm heading south right on cue
You say let's compromise, head for the skies
Nothing to lose. I've got nothing to lose
So please don't leave me here. I'll be lost without you
Don't make me stay. 'Cause I'll only be in the way
The lyrics of Des'ree's song "Nothing to Lose" explore the complexities of a relationship and the fear of losing the person you love. The singer is struggling with her emotions and insecurities, which is making her behave in ways that are unusual for her, and she is worried that her partner will leave her.
In the first verse, she admits to being reveling in her insecurity, something that is so unlike her, but she doesn't know what to do with how she feels. She is struggling with inner turmoil and is beating herself and those around her, which is the source of her confusion. Her partner suggests they compromise and head for the skies, and she agrees, feeling like she has nothing to lose.
The second verse expands on her fear of being alone, as she pleads with her partner not to leave her as she'll be lost without him. She is feeling scared and uncertain and is worried that she'll only get in the way if she stays. The bridge of the song adds an element of humor, as the singer threatens to punch the person who dares to call her hormonal, highlighting the emotional intensity she is experiencing. Ultimately the song finishes on a hopeful note, with the singer agreeing to compromise and move forward, hoping to avoid losing the person she loves.
