In 1994 the hit single "You Gotta Be" hit Billboard Top 5 and was a hit in the UK three times. It also allowed Des'ree to break into America. "You Gotta Be" was also a major hit in the United States, and it was featured in the movie The Next Karate Kid, starring Hilary Swank. The second song from Des'ree's second album, "Crazy Maze" featured in the movie Nothing to Lose. Coincidentally, her last album ("Dream Soldier") featured a song entitled "Nothing to Lose". Her song "Kissing You" featured on the 1996 Baz Luhrman movie "Romeo + Juliet" and is generally considered to be one of her greatest works and a showcase for her distinctive and impressive vocals.
In 1999, she won a Brit Award for the British Female Solo Artist category. Her 2003 release Dream Soldier was considerably less successful.

with your cool vibes and logical point of view.
For you I'd go babe, the extra mile,
But you confuse me, so I'm gonna ask you,
Why are you making me blue?
Is it because baby, your so sad inside.
And why, are you making me cry?
You don't want to talk about it,
Say I'm crazy and it's all inside my head.
But I'm not gonna, let it go.
Let's start talking, take it slow.
Don't be frightened, I won't bite ya,
Move in closer. I just want to hold your hand.
Come on baby, don't say no.
Let's start talking, keep on talking.
Why are you making me blue?
Is it because baby, your so sad inside.
And why, are you making me cry?
Is it because baby, your so terrified
The song "Why" by Des'ree is about a relationship that experiences communication problems. The lyrics suggest that the singer's partner is emotionally closed off and unwilling to share personal feelings or problems. Despite this, the singer is willing to go the extra mile for the relationship and wants to work through their issues together.
The chorus of the song poses two questions, "Why are you making me blue? Is it because baby, you're so sad inside. And why are you making me cry? Is it because baby, you're so terrified." These lines suggest that the singer's partner's emotional unavailability is affecting the singer's own emotions, causing them to feel sad and frightened. The singer wants their partner to open up and share what is causing their emotional turmoil so that they can work through it together.
The song is a poignant expression of the difficulties often experienced in romantic relationships. It speaks to the need for emotional openness and honest communication, and the feelings of frustration and vulnerability that arise when those needs are not met.
