"We definitely want to establish a connection with listeners through the aggression, the lyrics & the overall sound of the band, but first and foremost we write and play what we want to hear and what we really think and feel - it's really as simple as that." Says vocalist & songwriter Mike Smith. "People can categorize us however they want, and it may even be justified in some ways through what we have in common with particular music styles, but we're very inspired by MANY different styles and aspects of metal & music in general, and I do believe that is apparent when you listen to the songs. We've heard from so many people that one of the main reasons they enjoy our music is because every song is different. Of course, as time goes by we're going to have songs that have plenty in common with one another, but we're paying attention to make sure we keep in varied enough in our delivery to keep metalheads interested, and hopefully attract some people who aren't even into heavy music."
The members of DESIRE TO DESTROY are not strangers to the American metal scene, and have seen some action on the frontlines in their previous experience with their former band, Metal Blade Records' power metal act CELLADOR.
"It was an amazing time in our lives. We met a great deal of awesome people, played a shitload of insane shows with many incredible bands and fans, and we really enjoyed ourselves. It was an enriching experience for all of us and we feel like it has seasoned us as performers to where we need to be. But the band lost track of what was really important. The music, the passion, the desire. Sooner than later it became a battle between inflated egos and a power struggle over who was in charge of the band's mixed-up priorities." Mike says. "It became more about the person, not the band. It became more about the party, and not the show. Over a year just flew by without progress. In fact, the band took many steps backward during this time with lineup changes and missed opportunities. In many ways, our experience in CELLADOR showed us exactly what NOT to do."
That being said, the band seems to have absolutely, positively, no intentions of stopping their journey now, and will do whatever it takes to move forward and continue purusing their careers.
After deciding to start the new project in Spring '08, Mike and Dave spent the next year writing songs, recording demos, and seeking the right people to complete the band (which is still looking for a 2nd guitar player - message them if interested!). A year later the Spring of '09 saw the release of the band's debut self-titled demo, the "DESIRE TO DESTROY" EP. Since then the band has been playing as many shows in and around the area that they can get their hands on and focusing on building their local & regional fanbase while recording more and more demos of new material. The follow up to the debut self-titled demo, the "3 YEARS" EP is currently being tracked as is expected to surface in the Spring of 2010.
A young band, DESIRE TO DESTROY grow with each live performance. Recording every new track with passion as if it would be their last. The opening lines of the song "Silence Waits" by Desire to Destroy, suggests that there are certain things that are better left unsaid, hence the words being “veiled” or concealed. The next line speaks to the idea that truth can often be found in the absence of words, in silence. The final line basically is a call to action to embrace silence, because it is in that silence that truth, according to the song, waits.
The next verse begins by suggesting a feeling within the singer, “a stirring in my soul”. This feeling is evidenced by a candle with a “fainted glow” and the tears rising as “cries upon deaf ears”. There is some internal struggle happening as the singer acknowledges “the weakness in my vein” and then the demons calling with their refrain. However, the singer also acknowledges that this struggle is something that they have been suppressing “subsided all these years”.
The chorus of the song repeats the idea of “veiling” the words, and again emphasizes that silence holds truth which is waiting to be discovered, suggesting a sort of solace or peace.
The final verse again uses the metaphor of the candle, this time with its flame growing stronger.
