Deva's parents are a mystic/artist father and a musically talented mother, she was taught violin, piano and received voice training. By the time she was five years old, she was already chanting the Gayatri Mantra daily, and since that time she continues to integrate meditation into her life.
She has studied Shiatsu, Reflexology, CranioSacral Therapy and Massage, but music remains her first love. The influence of Indian classical music is evident in her singing, although she has never attempted to copy or steal from the tradition. "It just comes naturally," she says, "as if I'd heard it all before, in another life."
Among the numerous letters of appreciation she has received since the release of her albums, many describe how her music has been used to accompany and enhance the sacred passages of birth and death. In fact, Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, the world famous author of On Death And Dying, requested that Miten and Deva bring their music to accompany her passing. "We have played for many people," says Deva, "but to play personally for Elizabeth was something I will never forget.”

The Moola Mantra is a highly revered mantra in the Hindu tradition, and this particular version, by Deva Premal, is a chant of great spiritual significance. The mantra begins with "Om Satchitananda Parabrahma," which can be interpreted in several ways. One interpretation is that it means the ultimate reality or Brahman is one with reality, consciousness, and bliss. It can also be interpreted to mean the ultimate reality is made up of these three qualities or states of being. The following line, "Purushothama Paramatma," refers to the supreme consciousness or divine force, which is also present within each individual as the "Paramatma" or higher self.
The final two lines of the mantra are a tribute to the divine feminine and masculine aspects, "Sri Bhagavati Sametha Sri Bhagavate Namaha." The term "Sri Bhagavati" refers to the female deity, while "Sri Bhagavate" refers to the male aspect. This is a recognition that the divine is not gendered but encompasses both the feminine and masculine aspects. Finally, the mantra concludes with the repetition of "Hari om tat sat," which has been translated to mean "the absolute truth is the only reality" or simply "God is the truth."
