Funeral
Devin Townsend (Ocean Machine) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Jesus, here lies my brother
Tortured and blown
Stretch for the heavens and go...
I watch him go
Here it comes

Jesus was a poor boy
Jesus was a poor boy
"It's just a spring clean for the May queen"
I'm coming home

And this one's for the life
This one's for the funeral in the rain
And if only for tonight
This one's for the funeral in the rain

The day's gone and the year's gone
And I don't know when I'm coming home
I can't hold on to what I've had
When what I've had
There's nothing left at all...

So this one's for the life
This one's for the funeral in the rain
And if only for tonight
Close your eyes and try to sleep again...

A world away, you turn away
I'm wide awake, and I don't need your home
Tell me why he went, it seems to be

An element to this mystery
It's so cold today, so I get away, and I'm left behind with nothing but words...

Overall Meaning

The song "Funeral" by Devin Townsend is a melancholic and emotional piece about loss and the struggles of coping with it. The opening lines paint a vivid picture of a burial ceremony where the singer's brother has been laid to rest after undergoing tremendous pain and struggle. The singer wishes his brother to find peace by stretching towards the heavens as he watches him leave. There is an element of sadness and helplessness in these lines, and the religious references add to the solemnity of the occasion.

The next few lines, "Jesus was a poor boy / It's just a spring clean for the May queen" are a reference to Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven," and serve to contrast the grandeur of religious iconography with the stark reality of poverty and death. The singer acknowledges that he is coming home, but he is doing so for the funeral in the rain, which speaks to the sorrow and despair he feels.

The rest of the song is a reflection on the passing of time and the inevitability of loss. The singer laments that he doesn't know when he's coming home, and he can't hold on to what he's had because there's nothing left. The funeral serves as a reminder that life is fleeting, and that everyone must eventually face their mortality.

I firmly believe that the recording of this concert belongs in the Smithsonian. This music needs to be preserved for future generations.

@MrTonypetrucci

On that note, they should re-make the gold record sitting in the satellite, and send the message to other species that something beautiful was created here in earth which inspired future generations.

@neocenobyte

Absolutely. This was out of this world. Full dominion of Wall of Sound, live. One take.
Fucking legend!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

possibly the greatest 30 minutes in (live) music history right here.

@wetluggage1

'Funeral' is, in my opinion, the single greatest piece of music that has ever been written.

Saw Devin several years ago in my local hometown. He stood on that stage and screamed his lungs out. Then, after the show, I met him, and he said in the most gentle voice imaginable, "thank you so much for coming out to support me". I cried, and then I had him sign my pants with a Sharpie. Truth.

@Shifty00

When I saw him live he stayed to meet with people from the crowd and stayed until everyone was able to say hi and talk. The club owner came by to tell him to wrap it up cause he wanted to start cleaning and clear out the place. Such an amazing personable musician, and the fact he took that extra time after performing all night is something I will never forget.

Agreed 100%
