Copeland started out as a member of the Odd Squad, later known as the Coughee Brothaz, a group of rappers signed to Rap-A-Lot Records. The label is notable for being the home of hip-hop artists such as Geto Boys, Scarface, and Too Much Trouble. Copeland moved on to become part of Scarface's Facemob, before going solo in 1998.[1] Copeland has released six solo albums: The Dude (1998), Just Tryin' ta Live (2002), To tha X-Treme (2004), Waitin' to Inhale (2007), Landing Gear (2008), and Gotta Be Me (2010). He also made a number of guest appearances, including on Dr. Dre's "Fuck You" in 1999, and De La Soul's "Baby Phat" in 2001.[1]
In 2008, he ended his 15 year relationship with Houston based Rap-A-Lot Records because the label failed to renew his contract.[2] Later that year, he signed with indie label Razor & Tie.[3]
Despite being a critical success, Devin the Dude has not achieved success in the mainstream but continues to be a well-known underground hip-hop artist. The New York Times has called him "A brilliant oddball with a spaced-out flow."[4] In addition, he has been called "Rap's best-kept secret" and "Your favorite rapper's favorite rapper."[5] In 2007, he appeared in a documentary titled Screwed In Houston produced by VBS/Vice Magazine that details the history of the Houston rap scene.

You could just picture her, layin' on a mattress
And she's got you wonderin' if she' sexually active
You think of somethin' slick to say to pull her like a magnet
Came with your A game, thirty minutes or less
That's all that takes and she'll come out of that dress
Conversated with the lady maybe she'll buy it
Oh, she did, you took her where? The Hyatt
You want to stay in touch, figurin' she's the one for ya
And now you're tellin' all your friends
How you hit the first night and she didn't even ask for no ends
And your feelings got deeper and deeper
You went shoppin' for a promise right, thinkin' you can keep her
But you ain't heard from her
And ain't seen her in a week
Yep, fucked around and fell in love with a FREAK
"Some of you might know" - MC Shan 'Project Ho'
FREAK
You finally get a call, it was her, sayin' she was out of town
Somethin' came up but she's back now
You pay it no mind because the ladie's so fine
You let the same shit slide bout three, four times
She break you off
Everyday, every way
New sexual ideas, different ways to lay
Your homeboys teasin' about your nose wide open
You pay 'em no mind, you plan on eloping with the broad
Scopin' how hard it is with no vagina
You get up out your sleep to go find her
You just can't let her loose
And every time she's missin' she's got a better excuse
So you don't get mad
Just ask her how was her day
She went shoppin' for some trashy lingerie
Brand new toys, fresh batteries inside 'em
You wonder how they work but she's already tried 'em
She's a FREAK
"Some of you might know" - MC Shan 'Project Ho'
FREAK
And then there came a time, when you got the word in the hood
Some of your patna's say they heard she's no good
With the evidence to back it up but you don't want to listen
They just don't wanna see a nigga happy, they trippin'
And you pretend, everything's, all gravy
More and more you have to apprehend your old lady
You up and say, "Fuck it", went and bought her a ring
The price wasn't a problem
Shit it ain't no thing
If that'll make you settle down and she'll just chill
The two of y'all can start from scratch and just build
But she's steady goin' AWOL
Now she's at the game?
When she started watchin' baseball?
Say dawg
Don't even try to search
Cause if you catch up with her, what you see might hurt
Oh where, oh where have your little girl gone?
Probably givin' one of the players of the Astro's dome
Cause she's a FREAK
"Some of you might know" - MC Shan 'Project Ho'
FREAK
"A girl we label as a FREAK" - MC Shan 'Project Ho'
Devin the Dude’s song “Freak” paints a picture of a man falling in love with a sexually adventurous woman. The song starts with the man describing the woman as beautiful, intelligent, fine and attractive. He imagines her as being sexually active and thinks of something slick to say to attract her. He takes her to a Hyatt hotel, and they have a wild night together that leaves him wanting more. He falls deeper in love with her and starts planning a future together, only to realize that she is not as committed as he is. The woman disappears often, and he hears rumors that she is not a good person, but he chooses to ignore them, convinced that she is “the one.” The song ends with the man lamenting that he has fallen in love with a “freak” who is not interested in a committed relationship.
