He was previously a member of the rock band Wasserfall . The group disbanded in 2011 and Dewald has been pursuing a solo career ever since.

His first solo album was Vergeet Wat Jy Weet van Liefde , which was released in 2012 and achieved platinum status with the hits “Eendag As Ons Groot Is”, “Sewentien” and “Vergeet Wat Jy Weet van Liefde”. His next album, Ek en Jy , achieved gold status and won a Sama for best contemporary music album. It also received four Ghoema nominations and a Tempo nomination. His latest album is Jy Is die Storm .

Wasserfall was the mentor of Ivan Roux and Deidré Barnard in the reality music competition Die Kontrak which was broadcast on VIA on DStv . The Contract follows a race for a million rand contract that awaits the eventual winner. Wasserfall's song "New Beginning" was the show's theme song.
