The origin of the name of the band is related on their website. The tongue-in-cheek back-story recounts a historically questionable ancestral story beginning in 16th century Sweden. Supposedly, ancestors of the band members performed orchestral works in defiance of the ruling church at the time (possibly in reference to the newly installed protestant Lutheran national church, in power during the mid and late 16th century). The orchestra was forced to go into hiding, performing in secret, with the assistance of oppressed peasants during the era. After years of performing for the pleasure of these peasants, the story claims that the church put a bounty on the performers' lives, and that this bounty was so high that the orchestra knew they would soon be captured, and thus chose to play a spectacular final show before becoming martyred to the church.
While this account is historically unsupported it does provide a backdrop to DSO's eclectic musical style

Diablo Swing Orchestra Lyrics

Shomi de natsuin konkai ha katsu zo
Stayed with me - so violently
Played all your games on me
Broke all the chains just in time
A leap of faith made me fall back in line
Yatoo yihu! Hadjimeru jikan-da!
Shomi de natsuin konkai ha katsu zo
Made peace with what I held for true
Have faith in what I now must do
Sweet devotion, a sacred smile
Traded my secrets so you'll never leave my side
Yatoo yihu! Hadjimeru jikan-da!
Shomi de natsuin konkai ha katsu zo
Yatoo yihu! Hadjimeru jikan-da!
Shomi de natsuin konkai ha katsu zo
The lyrics to Diablo Swing Orchestra's song "Black Box Messiah" are expressive and somewhat cryptic, with a mix of Eastern and Western influences. The opening lines, "Yatoo yihu! Hadjimeru jikan-da! Shomi de natsuin konkai ha katsu zo" appear to be a combination of Japanese and possibly Ainu language, and may be translated as a call to action or a declaration of intent. The following lines, "Stayed with me - so violently, Played all your games on me, Broke all the chains just in time, A leap of faith made me fall back in line" seem to describe a past relationship that was damaging but ultimately empowering. The singer has broken free of the chains that held them back and taken a leap of faith, which has helped them get back on track.
The next lines, "Made peace with what I held for true, Have faith in what I now must do, Sweet devotion, a sacred smile, Traded my secrets so you'll never leave my side" speak to a sense of acceptance and dedication. The singer has come to terms with their beliefs and has faith in their path, and has shared their secrets with someone they trust. The final refrain, "Yatoo yihu! Hadjimeru jikan-da! Shomi de natsuin konkai ha katsu zo" brings the song full circle, with a sense of urgency and determination in the repeated call to action.
Overall, "Black Box Messiah" is a powerful, enigmatic song that blends influences from different cultures to create a unique and thoughtful piece of music.
