Shoot Out the Lights
Diamond Head Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let me tell you now, about a friend of mine
He tried to shoot them lights, with whiskey and the wine
He didn't get so far, ah his gun was wrong
Now my sweet friend, where's your song?

Shoot out the lights, shoot out the lights
Shoot out the lights, shoot out the lights
Now that friend of mine, he never made a day
Didn't know what to do, told him to get away
I ain't going yet he said, I'm gonna be a star
I got a gun my friend, sitting in the car

Shoot out the lights, shoot out the lights
Shoot out the lights, shoot out the lights

Let me tell you now, about a friend of mine
He tried to shoot them lights, with whiskey and the wine
He didn't get so far, ah his gun was wrong
Now my sweet friend, where's your song?

Shoot out the lights, shoot out the lights
Shoot out the lights, shoot out the lights

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Diamond Head's song Shoot Out the Lights tell the story of a friend who tried to shoot out the lights with the combination of whiskey and wine. However, his attempt was unsuccessful as his gun was wrong. The song then speaks of the friend's failed aspirations of becoming a star despite not knowing what to do. The friend is portrayed as someone who refused to give up, bluntly stating that he was not going to leave. The repetition of the line "shoot out the lights" throughout the song seems to suggest a sense of frustration and a desire to take action.

The song is full of symbolism and can be interpreted in different ways, including as a metaphor for the elusive pursuit of fame and fortune. It could also be interpreted as a warning against the dangers of alcohol and guns. The lyrics depict a sense of hopelessness in the face of unattainable dreams and the consequences of not knowing one's limitations. The final line, "now my sweet friend, where's your song?" seems to suggest a sense of loss and disappointment.

Ah,...I think I remember this song from when I saw them years ago in a pub in Nuneaton. I bought two copies of their 1st demo and the band signed one of them. I'll dig them out of the attic to check. Seeing them with Saxon on the 25th November 2022. Should be a great night.
