Pick Me Up
Diamond Rio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sittin' in my pickup truck
Listening to the country station
Singer singing 'bout a lasting love
Me, I'm losing patience
'Cause I don't know what he's talking about
I fell so far that I can't get out
A helping hand on a hopeless heart
Is all I need for a brand new start

[Chorus]
Pick me up so I can fall again
Help me get back on my feet again
I gotta get back to ground zero
Before I have a chance to win
Pick me up so I can fall again

She sits down beside me at the cafe's bar
Lookin' better than she ought to
Another chance for true romance
And I pray that it won't fall through
I hope you know what I'm talkin' about
I'm in so deep that I can't climb out
A healing hand on a hurtin' heart is all I need
For a brand new start
Pick me up so I can fall again

[Chorus]

Pick me up, pick me up
Pick me up so I can fall again

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of Diamond Rio's song "Pick Me Up" finds the singer sitting in his pickup truck listening to the country station, where a singer is singing about a "lasting love." The singer realizes that he has no idea what that even means because he has fallen so far that he can't get out. He needs a helping hand on his hopeless heart to start fresh. The chorus emphasizes the singer's desire to be picked up and fall again to get back on his feet. He believes that he has to get back to ground zero to have a chance at winning, and for that, he needs someone to pick him up.

In the second stanza, the singer meets a woman who sits beside him at the cafe's bar and looks better than she ought to. The encounter is another chance for true romance, but he prays that it won't fall through. He is so deep that he can't climb out, and he wants a healing hand on his hurting heart to help him start again. The chorus repeats, accentuating the singer's plea to be picked up and fall again.
