Perfect Family
Diana Ah Naid Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

how do we go halves in a dog or a house at the beach
how do you intend to make this all up to me
what if love is just like war with no-one to clean the mess
what if we hold court and i invite my relatives

i thought this was it for me
got a house and a colour t.v.
we'll have a dog instead of a kid
we'll be the perfect family
what's the reason we broke up
wernt we trying hard enough
now i've had to sell the ring
just to pay for everything

how did it go wrong with all the promises we made
how do you take back all the things you said and never meant
what if theres no right and we've been fighting for a wrong
what if you had known we wouldn't get along

i thought this was it for me
got a house and a colour t.v.
we'll have a dog instead of a kid
we'll be the perfect family
what's the reason we broke up
weren't we trying hard enough
now i've had to sell the ring
just to pay for everything

i gave you the best of me and now i want it back
who am i to question what is fair in love and war
they were you cd's but it was me who bought the stack
now i just want half of everything to get you back

i thought this was it for me
got a house and a colour t.v.
we'll have a dog instead of a kid
we'll be the perfect family
what's the reason we broke up
wernt we trying hard enough
now i've had to sell the ring
just to pay for everything

just to pay for everything

wernt we trying hard enough

just to pay for everything

we've got a house and a colour t.v.

we'll have a dog instead of a kid

we'll be the perfect family

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Diana Ah Naid's "Perfect Family" are a reflection of a relationship gone wrong. The singer is questioning how things went awry with all the promises they made to each other. The lines "how do we go halves in a dog or a house at the beach, how do you intend to make this all up to me" highlight the difficulties the couple is facing in dividing their possessions, indicating that a split is imminent. The singer wonders if love is like war, where there is no one to clean up the mess after the fight is over.

The chorus, "I thought this was it for me, got a house and a colour T.V., we'll have a dog instead of a kid, we'll be the perfect family" shows the contrast between what the singer thought was going to be the perfect life and what turned out to be utter chaos. The singer is left with no other option but to sell the ring just to cover the bills, indicating that they are now stuck in a financial predicament.

The second verse delves deeper into the relationship's brokenness, questioning what went wrong in all the promises they made, wondering if fighting for each other was wrong. The bridge highlights the singer's anger, asking for half of everything they had shared, just to get the partner back.

Overall, "Perfect Family" is a relatable song that showcases the reality of relationships where love alone isn't enough.

It's funny - but I've had some version of this song on whatever I've listened to over the years (going from cassette through to Itunes) and I never thought to look at the video. And I must offer a thank you to this song too - I got my first girlfriend because she thought I was deep for something I'd written on a school book. "What if there's no right and we're fighting for a wrong?" Ahhh, memories.

Ryan Rixon
