Don't Dream It's Over
Diana Krall Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There is freedom within
There is freedom without
Try to catch a deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead
Many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're traveling with me
Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm towing my car
There's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
In the paper today
Tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the TV page

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm walking again
To the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead
Barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come

To build a wall between us
You know they won't win

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Don't Dream It's Over" convey a message of hope and resilience in the face of adversity. The opening lines suggest that while there may be limitations and obstacles in life, there is still value and potential for freedom. The metaphor of trying to catch a deluge in a paper cup speaks to the idea of attempting the impossible, but still trying nonetheless.

The lyrics then shift to a more ominous tone, acknowledging that there is a battle ahead and many battles are lost. But the lyrics consistently point towards determination and perseverance despite the challenges. By encouraging listeners to not dream that it's over, the lyrics suggest that hope should not be abandoned even in the darkest of times. The reference to television news and tales of war and waste reinforces the idea that the world can be a bleak and discouraging place, but the song ultimately encourages listeners to keep pushing forward and not let the world build a wall between us.

The final verse brings the song full-circle, with the singer walking once again and counting the steps to the door of a loved one's heart. The imagery of shadows barely clearing the roof and the feeling of liberation and relief suggest a sense of triumph and renewal despite past struggles.

Already a fan, recommended by my Dad prior to his passing. Have your "Live in Paris" and "Quiet Nights" albums, but very joyful that your voice is so flexible for many genres--Like your Wallflower album. As soon as I land on a job, will purchase this. Interp. of my favorite Eagles' "I Can't Tell You Why" superb. Because of exposure to your album "Maybe You'll Be There" is one of my recent favorites (otherwise I wouldn't have known this song). Quite a match for Ol' Blue Eyes' Sinatra version, and also enjoy the subtleties of your "I've Got You Under My Skin."

Diana Krall's voice is one of the best in our century--hard to beat like others have mentioned velvety, sultry and full low voice, so expressive! Ms. Krall deserve all the lauds and grammys you've earned. Met Clayton in a friend's (Custom dress/suit maker shoppe). Of course, he promo'd your music as well.

May the Love of the Lord Jesus Christ/Blessings be with you, your Elvis C. and kids from an admiring vocals fan (and fantastic jazz piano too), who also is an admirer of jazz/ sacred music, rock, other.

One of my favorite songs by Crowded House. She does a wonderful rendition.

I've heard the Crowded House version a lot of times...but it wasn't until I heard Krall's version when I actually 'heard' the lyrics. Beautifully done....

@sabra9964 Agreed and Stan Walker's rendition is also ataahua (beautiful). Sung in English and Te Reo Maori, NZ's indigenous language.
