Every Time We Say Goodbye
Diana Krall Lyrics

Every time we say goodbye, I wonder why a little
Why the Gods above me, who must be in the know
Think so little of me, they allow you to go
When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it
I can hear a lark somewhere; begin to sing about it
There's no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to minor
When you're near, there's such an air of spring about it
I can hear a lark somewhere, begin to sing about it
There's no love song finer, but how strange the change from major to minor
Every time we say goodbye
In Diana Krall's song Every Time We Say Goodbye, the lyrics express the hurt and pain of lovers being separated. The singer says that every time she says goodbye to her lover, a part of her dies inside. She wonders why fate has dealt her such a cruel hand, allowing her love to slip away from her. The singer seems to be questioning the gods and their intentions, as she feels that they must know something she does not.
As the lover is near, there is a sense of freshness and new beginnings, as if spring has arrived. The singer can hear a lark singing in the distance, symbolizing happiness and freedom. The lyrics of this song show how intense and powerful true love can be, making it difficult to say goodbye. The change from major to minor chords in the music represents the bittersweet feeling of being in love and the pain of separation.
