In 1959, Ross was brought to the attention of Milton Jenkins, the manager of the local doo-wop group The Primes, by Mary Wilson. Primes member Paul Williams convinced Jenkins to enlist Ross in the sister group The Primettes, which included Wilson, Florence Ballard and Betty McGlown.
In 1976, Billboard magazine named her the female entertainer of the century. In 1993, The Guinness Book Of World Records listed her as the most successful female artist ever (the title is now attributed to Madonna), partly due to her combined total of eighteen number-one singles, six of them recorded solo and the remaining dozen from her work with the Supremes.
Ross was also one of the few pop singers to find modest success in the acting world winning an Academy Award nomination for her role as Billie Holiday in the 1972 film, "Lady Sings the Blues" as well as having hits with other film roles such as "Mahogany", "Out of Darkness" and "Double Platinum", not to mention her role in "The Wiz".
Ross has been awarded many lifetime achievement accolades from many organizations and media outlets: she has been featured on BET, Soul Train, and awarded multiple times at the NAACP Image Awards, the Kennedy Center Honors in 2007 and given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement in 2011.
Ross' professional vocal collaborators have included the following during her career: Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Julio Iglesias, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Smokey Robinson, among many others.

'Cause there's a reason to rejoice, you see
(Everybody come out)
(And let's commence to singing joyfully)
Everybody look up
And feel the hope that we've been waiting on
(Everybody's glad)
Freedom, you see
Has got our hearts singing so joyfully
(Just look about)
(You owe it to yourself to check it out)
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Everybody be glad
'Cause the sun is shining just for us
Everybody wake up
Into the morning, into happiness
Hello world
It's like a different way of living now
(And thank you world)
We always knew that we'd be free somehow
In harmony
Let's show the world that we've got liberty
It's such a change
For us to live so independently
Freedom, you see
Has got our hearts singing so joyfully
Just look about
You owe it to yourself to check it out
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Everybody be glad (be glad)
Because the sun is shining just for us (yes, it is)
Everybody wake up (wake up)
Into the morning, into happiness (that's right)
Hello world
It's like a different way of living now
(Thank you world)
We always knew that we'd be free somehow
In harmony
Let's show the world that we've got liberty
It's such a change
For us to live so independently
Freedom, you see
Has got our hearts singing so joyfully
Just look about
You owe it to yourself to check it out
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Yeah
All right
Hey
Brand new day, brand new day
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Brand new day, brand new day
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Brand new day
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Brand new day, brand new day
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Brand new day, brand new day
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Oh-oh-oh, can't you feel a brand new day
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Oh-oh-oh, can't you feel a brand new day
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Oh-oh-oh, can't you feel a brand new day
Can't you feel a brand new day?
Oh-oh-oh, can't you feel a brand new day
Can't you, can't you?
Feel a, can't you feel a?
Can't you, can't you?
Feel a, can't you feel a?
In Diana Ross's song "Every Day Is A New Day," the singer speaks about the experience of moving on from a relationship after a breakup. The opening lyrics, "Every day is a new day / Since you went away," set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer acknowledges that life has changed since the person they were involved with is no longer in their life.
The lyrics continue to describe how the singer has learned to rely on themselves rather than on their ex-partner. The line "You were my comfort zone / I depended on you for everything" shows that the singer had placed a lot of importance on their relationship, but after the breakup, they've realized that they are capable of taking care of themselves.
The chorus repeats the idea that "Every day's a new day" since the breakup. The singer sees this as a positive thing, saying "It was best for you and me." Even though the relationship ended, the singer has found happiness and freedom in their newfound independence. The final lines of the song, "My whole life has made a change / Every day's a new day since you went away," reinforce the idea that moving on from a relationship can be a positive and transformative experience.

Every day is a new day
Each day is a fresh start
Since you went away
Since you departed
Since you went away from me
Since you left my side
My whole life has made a change
My entire world has transformed
Every day's a new day and I see
I now recognize that each day is an opportunity
It was best for you and me
Our separation was for the best
You were my comfort zone
You were my source of security
I depended on you for everything
I relied on you entirely
But now that you're gone
Now that you're not here anymore
I'm doing just fine without you
I am thriving without you
How I bless the day you went away
I am grateful for the day you left
Now I have a song inside
I now have a joyous melody within me
The birds sing to me
Nature sings to me
I finally can be
I am finally free to be myself
Free to spread my wings in harmony
Free to soar in harmony with myself and nature
Now the sun shines on me
Now I am basked in sunlight
I have been set free
I have been liberated
To collect my thoughts and jot them down
To gather and record my thoughts
All this happiness I've found
I have discovered true happiness
It may sound crazy, but I forgive you
It may seem unreasonable, but I have forgiven you
And want the best for you
And desire the best for you
The circumstances came my way
The situation unfolded as it did
Now I've learned to do for myself
Now I have learned to be self-sufficient
And all the things I thought
And all the things I anticipated
That you would do for me
That you would accomplish for me
Like leaving me alone to go for my own
Such as allowing me to pursue my own path
When you're not at home, I'm glad you're gone
When you are not present, I find joy in your absence
