Battlefield
Diana Ross Lyrics

(paul carrack/nick lowe)

I live on a battlefield
Surrounding by the ruins of a love we built
And them destroyed between us
The smoke has cleared
As I stumble through the rubble
I'm dazed, seeing double
And I'm truly mystified

My new home is a shell-hole filled
With tears and muddy water
And bits of broken heart
All around, there is desolation
Scenes of devestation
Of a love been torn apart

I live on a battlefield
Though one where not one
Single drop of blood has spilled
Is no less horryfying
Sweet memories
Of a bygone situation
Lie shattered, torn and battered
And scattered all around

My new home is a shell-hole filled
With tears and muddy water
And bits of broken heart
All around, there is desolation
Scenes of devestation
Of a love been torn apart

Everything that can, has gone wrong
It's gonna take spine to carry on
Like a drownin' woman coming up for air
I'm looking for another survivor
I can't see one anywhere

My new home is a shell-hole filled
With tears and muddy water
And bits of broken heart
All around, there is desolation
Scenes of devestation
Of a love been torn apart

I live on a battlefield, hey
I live on a battlefield, hey
Can't go on, baby
Tears and muddy water
Scattered all around me, babe

I live on a battlefield
I live on a battlefield

Overall Meaning

The song "Battlefield" by Diana Ross speaks to the aftermath of a relationship that has ended. The lyrics describe the singer living on a "battlefield" that was once the home filled with love that she built with her partner but it is now surrounded by ruins. The emotional impact of the relationship's end is evident from the imagery used in the lyrics that describe devastation and desolation. The use of metaphors like a "shell-hole filled with tears and muddy water" or "bits of broken heart" suggest that the singer is not only physically in a battleground but emotionally suffering from the memories of what was once a beautiful thing between her and her partner. The lyrics also mention the struggle of carrying on and trying to find another survivor to get through the tough times together, as the singer cannot see any around her.

Overall, "Battlefield" speaks to the pain of relationships and the challenge of moving on after they end. There are a lot of emotions at play in the lyrics and the use of metaphors and powerful imagery help to convey the depth of feelings experienced by the singer.

It is a crime that this song was not a huge hit -- for both Ms. Ross and the songwriter.  It is a terrific song, and she is the perfect match for the song.  Ten years earlier, it would have gone to #1.

This was an amazing album. However, Motown, however put little or no effort promoting the album.I’m still blown away every time I hear “Blame it on the Sun” Many years she came to Toronto, and came out into the audience to sing the song; I was in the audience sitting adjacent to where she stood to perform the song!👏🎆👏🎆✨

Another Diana gem that should've been a hit for her!

I love this song too. Very up lifting

Not happy tonight because Miss Ross is performing not too far away and I am not there. This fabulous video tribute to accompany a song that, as had been forcefully noted below, should have been a massive hit has cheered me up quite a bit! Thank you!

Perfect song for her. With the way she has been perceived over the years, because of Mary Wilson's books and jealousies of contemporaries, she must have felt for a long time always on a defensive. To have people pass judgement on you who don't even know you must be a heavy burden on your shoulders. She has worked so hard for so long . . .These days whenever I see her, she looks happy. I think she has finally made peace with herself.
