Ross is one of the most successful female artists of her era, both due to her solo work and her role as lead singer of The Supremes during the 1960s.

In 1959, Ross was brought to the attention of Milton Jenkins, the manager of the local doo-wop group The Primes, by Mary Wilson. Primes member Paul Williams convinced Jenkins to enlist Ross in the sister group The Primettes, which included Wilson, Florence Ballard and Betty McGlown.

In 1976, Billboard magazine named her the female entertainer of the century. In 1993, The Guinness Book Of World Records listed her as the most successful female artist ever (the title is now attributed to Madonna), partly due to her combined total of eighteen number-one singles, six of them recorded solo and the remaining dozen from her work with the Supremes.

Ross was also one of the few pop singers to find modest success in the acting world winning an Academy Award nomination for her role as Billie Holiday in the 1972 film, "Lady Sings the Blues" as well as having hits with other film roles such as "Mahogany", "Out of Darkness" and "Double Platinum", not to mention her role in "The Wiz".

Ross has been awarded many lifetime achievement accolades from many organizations and media outlets: she has been featured on BET, Soul Train, and awarded multiple times at the NAACP Image Awards, the Kennedy Center Honors in 2007 and given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement in 2011.

Ross' professional vocal collaborators have included the following during her career: Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Julio Iglesias, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Smokey Robinson, among many others.

@Davonche Smith I agree. They are better here. According to Lamont Dozier's autobiography, the last time the original Supremes were in the studio with him was for "In and Out Love." Forever Came Today was recorded after Lamont stopped showing up at Motown so he was not aware of the Andantes being used on the recording of Forever Came Today. He was not sure why the Andantes were used since they had not been used on any of the prior Supremes recordings that he oversaw in the studio.

If you'll listen carefully to the background vocals on the original recording, you'll hear the Andantes (and how Gordy ever thought they were even remotely comparable to Cindy and Mary's vocals is a mystery). After listening to the original recording, listen to this recording. It's glaringly obvious that it's the Andantes, most likely recorded. Another dead give away is the fact that Diana is using a microphone. Neither Cindy nor Mary are using one, nor are there mikes on their gowns. You might argue, perhaps, that there is a boom mike out of frame. But then why would Diana need one? No, the real evidence is comparing Mary and Cindy's vocals in earlier songs to this one. Mary Wilson in her book said that this was the first Supremes song she never sang on. They're lip-synching.

After Florence was fired it was hard for the public to view Ross in a sympathetic light. If you were a fan at the time you know that Flo was the fan favourite. Gordy set out to destroy Florence so she would never be a threat to Ross. And Gordy and Ross will go down in history for perpetrating one of the cruelest plots in show business history.

Such an iconic performance! Cindy and MW bookending Diana as she poses in the background. Then she gracefully and sensually slides the mic up her right side while stretching out her left arm in Diva style. Then the 3 ladies practically march across the stage together in a show of unity, and woman power until Diana separates from the group. I love how she gently sings “Hello happiness....” looking directly into the camera. She really worked this performance and the camera. Great gowns that eventually appeared on The 70’s Supremes.

Sometimes, a Motown studio group called the Andantes backed up Diana in the studio instead of Mary and Flo/Cindy. If that was the case with this song, that could explain the better quality on the TV show.

Example: The "Supremes" recorded both the Christmas song called "Joy to the World" and the Three Dog Night hit with the same title. No Supreme appeared on both recordings. Diana did the Christmas song with the Andantes. By the time they did the Three Dog Night song, paired with the Four Tops, she had left the group.

You are blinded by your love for Ms. Ross which is admirable—- but ask true expert’s. There are many singers who are more talented and can sing circles around her. Simply being visible does not a great singer make. It just makes for a great performer. When all is said and done, the essentials things will rise to the top. You’re right! Diana is stunning. Diana did it for me from the 1st time I saw the group on tv way back in 1964. Two years later at Blinstrub’s in Boston where they were performing, she beckoned me on stage to sing Where did our love go with them. I was transported to another world. I’ve sung with her and danced with her many times over the years and she truly is amazingly beautiful and her scent would leave me lightheaded. She broke down so many barriers that artists take for granted today and she did it with a mega watt smile, big hair, gorgeous gowns and her trademark silky voice.

There may have been bitterness between them after Gordy pushed Diana to lead, but he was absolutely correct. She had and still has superstar charisma that made them into the megastars of that decade, as big or bigger than the Beatles, turning out hit after hit songs that were some of the best written songs ever, they hold up with time, are still produced by current artists. They were the conversation the following morning at the water cooler. I still think it was Diana’s star power that sealed the deal. Saw her in August and she still thrills packed crowds when she enters the stage. She is legend!

I agree, but Gordy didn't push her to the lead. She wanted to be lead and when Where Did Our Love Go hit # one that sealed the deal and there was no stopping them. Saying he pushed her goes along with the narrative that he was somehow unfair to the others by "pushing her to the lead"

I think I read that Mary said she and Cindy couldn't make out what the Andantes were originally singing in the background on the single recording so they weren't sure what to sing in this performance, thus nothing but oohs, aahs and "My forever came today." It's a shame because it would have been great to hear Mary and Cindy sing something a little less simple. They looked gorgeous clapping, but still... The song might have even charted higher. Who knows?

@JACK ANTHONY true. It does seem as if that would have been a good solution. I know a number of things were going on behind the scenes that were causing problems - H-D-H's troubled departure from Motown, Diana drifting away from the group... I think Mary was hurt that it wasn't her and Cindy on the recording to begin with, and as a result didn't really care enough to want to know the actual lyrics. It does seem as if she and Cindy could have found them out from the Andantes or from sheet music which I assume existed for the song. To my ears, the backing lyrics sound like:
"Ah ah ahh I got my man at last. Got my man, and my loneliness has passed..."
At least that's what I've always pretended in my head haha

All she would have had to do was call her friend and (supremes stand in) Marlene barrow or louvain demps for those lyrics. I’ve never read that comment (lyrics) in all these years.

@Benjamin Adler I don't think Mary cared enough about the song to put forth that much effort. She probably figured if Motown didn't want her voice on the vinyl why bother learning the actual lyrics.

Possibly. All Mary ever said on “Forever” was she did not sing on the record nor was she much in Detroit to hear company gossip as the group out on the road. A sort of befuddling time for Mary in Feb ‘68.
