I'm Coming Out remix
Diana Ross Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm coming out
I'm coming
I'm coming out

I'm coming out
I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm coming out
I want the world to know
I got to let it show

There's a new me coming out
And I just had to live
And I want to give
I'm completely positive
I think this time around
I am gonna do it
Like you never do it
Like you never knew it
Oh, I'll make it through

The time has come for me
To break out of the shell
I have to shout
That I'm coming out

I'm coming out
I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm coming out
I want the world to know
I got to let it show
I'm coming out
I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm coming out
I want the world to know
I got to let it show

I've got to show the world
All that I want to be
And all my billities
There's so much more to me
Somehow, I have to make them
Just understand
I got it well in hand
And, oh, how I've planned
I'm spreadin' love
There's no need to fear
And I just feel so glad
Every time I hear

I'm coming out
I want the world to know
Got to let it show
I'm coming out

I want the world to know
I got to let it show

Overall Meaning

The song "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross is often interpreted as an anthem for coming out and embracing one's true identity. The infectious disco beat and catchy lyrics convey a message of empowerment and liberation, urging listeners to let go of their fears and insecurities and embrace their authentic selves. The repeated refrain of "I'm coming out" is a powerful declaration of self-acceptance, and the lyrics encourage listeners to be confident, positive, and proud of who they are.

The first verse of the song introduces the theme of self-expression and the desire to be seen and accepted for who you truly are. The line "I want the world to know, got to let it show" suggests a need for visibility, and the repetition of the phrase "I'm coming out" reinforces the idea that the singer is stepping out of the shadows and into the light. The second verse takes this theme even further, with references to a "new me" and a sense of excitement about the possibilities of the future. The line "I think this time around, I am gonna do it like you never do it, like you never knew it" has an almost confrontational tone, challenging others to see the singer in a new light and to embrace their newfound confidence.

Overall, "I'm Coming Out" is a celebration of self-discovery and self-acceptance, encouraging listeners to embrace their true selves and to be unapologetically proud of who they are.

I've always been perplexed by the drum track prior to settling in. Could it have been a guide track for horn overdubs which were eventually left out? Also, the phrasing of the song really threw me when I was transcribing it. To me it is a seven measure phrase but a measure seems to have been added for the horn swell to happen.
