In 1959, Ross was brought to the attention of Milton Jenkins, the manager of the local doo-wop group The Primes, by Mary Wilson. Primes member Paul Williams convinced Jenkins to enlist Ross in the sister group The Primettes, which included Wilson, Florence Ballard and Betty McGlown.
In 1976, Billboard magazine named her the female entertainer of the century. In 1993, The Guinness Book Of World Records listed her as the most successful female artist ever (the title is now attributed to Madonna), partly due to her combined total of eighteen number-one singles, six of them recorded solo and the remaining dozen from her work with the Supremes.
Ross was also one of the few pop singers to find modest success in the acting world winning an Academy Award nomination for her role as Billie Holiday in the 1972 film, "Lady Sings the Blues" as well as having hits with other film roles such as "Mahogany", "Out of Darkness" and "Double Platinum", not to mention her role in "The Wiz".
Ross has been awarded many lifetime achievement accolades from many organizations and media outlets: she has been featured on BET, Soul Train, and awarded multiple times at the NAACP Image Awards, the Kennedy Center Honors in 2007 and given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement in 2011.
Ross' professional vocal collaborators have included the following during her career: Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Julio Iglesias, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Smokey Robinson, among many others.

Kept thinkin' I could never live without you by my side
Then I spent so many nights Just thinking how you did me wrong
And I grew strong
And I learned how to get along
And so you're back from outer space
I just walked in to find you here, with that look upon your face
I should have made you leave your key
If I had known for just one second you'd be back to bother me
Go on now, go walk out the door
Just turn around now
'Cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to break me with goodbye?
Did you think I'd crumble?
Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh no not I, I will survive
For as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
And I've got all my love to give
I'll survive
I will survive
Hey hey
(I, I will survive)
Hey hey
(I, I will survive)
Every day
(I, I will survive)
Oh yeah
It took all the strength I had not to fall apart
Just trying hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart
And I spent oh so many nights just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry, but now I hold my head up high
And you see me, somebody new
I'm not that chained up little person still in love with you
And so you felt like dropping in and just expect me to be free
But now I'm savin' all my lovin' for someone who's lovin' me
Go on now, go walk out the door
Just turn around now
You're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to break me with goodbye?
Did you think I'd crumble?
Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh no not I, I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
And I've got all my love to give
I'll survive
I will survive
Hey hey
Go now, go walk out the door
Just turn around now
'Cause you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who tried to break me with goodbye?
Did you think I'd crumble?
Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh no not I, I will survive
Oh as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive
I've got all my life to live
And I've got all my love to give
I'll survive
I will survive
I will survive
(I, I will survive)
Hey
(I, I will survive)
Every day
(I, I will survive)
Yeah yeah
(I, I will survive)
Oh
(I, I will survive)
I will survive
(I, I will survive)
(I, I will survive)
I've got all my love to give
(I, I will survive)
I've got all my life to live
(I, I will survive)
My loving is not in vain, oh no
(I, I will survive)
I will survive
(I, I will survive)
I will survive
(I, I will survive)
Hey
The lyrics to Diana Ross's "I Will Survive" tell the story of a woman who has been hurt by a past lover but has found the strength to move on and survive without them. The first verse describes the initial feeling of helplessness and dependence on the partner who has now caused pain. However, as time goes on, the singer learns to be strong and independent, allowing them to gain self-confidence and not be hurt by their past lover's sudden return. The chorus repeatedly declares that the singer will survive and continue to love and live their life. The second verse highlights the progress and growth the singer has made since their breakup, showing that they have moved on and found a better partner who loves them just as they are.
The song's message is powerful and relatable, inspiring those who have been hurt in love to find their strength and continue on with life despite the pain. The upbeat melody and catchy chorus have made it a timeless classic that has been covered by countless artists and used in various movies and TV shows.

At first I was afraid, I was petrified
Initially I was scared and frozen, uncertain about what to do
Kept thinkin' I could never live without you by my side
I used to believe that I couldn't possibly survive without you
Then I spent so many nights Just thinking how you did me wrong
I stayed up countless nights ruminating on how you mistreated me
And I grew strong
Eventually, I emerged more resilient and confident
And I learned how to get along
I developed skills to adapt and cope without you around
And so you're back from outer space
You've returned, out of nowhere and unexpectedly
I just walked in to find you here, with that look upon your face
I arrived home only to see the expression on your face, standing there
I should have changed that stupid lock
In hindsight, I should have changed the lock to prevent you from entering
I should have made you leave your key
It would have been wise of me to ask for your key back
If I had known for just one second you'd be back to bother me
Now I know that if I'd only considered the possibility of you causing trouble again
Go on now, go walk out the door
Leave and don't come back
Just turn around now 'Cause you're not welcome anymore
I don't want you in my life any longer
Weren't you the one who tried to break me with goodbye?
You wanted to hurt me by leaving me behind
Did you think I'd crumble?
Did you believe I'd fall apart easily?
Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Or that I'd give up and surrender completely?
Oh no not I, I will survive
No, I'm a survivor, I'll keep pushing through
For as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive
My ability to love keeps me going and living my best life
I've got all my life to live
I have much to live for
And I've got all my love to give
I have much love to offer
It took all the strength I had not to fall apart
I had to work hard to avoid breaking down
Just trying hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart
My goal was to repair my broken heart and put myself back together
And you see me, somebody new
You're seeing a new, improved version of me
I'm not that chained up little person still in love with you
I'm no longer trapped by the chains of my emotions for you
And so you felt like dropping in and just expect me to be free
You hoped to just show up and take advantage of my newfound freedom
But now I'm savin' all my lovin' for someone who's lovin' me
But, I'm reserving my love for someone who actually loves me
I've got all my love to give, I'll survive
I have much love to offer and I'll keep thriving
