In 1959, Ross was brought to the attention of Milton Jenkins, the manager of the local doo-wop group The Primes, by Mary Wilson. Primes member Paul Williams convinced Jenkins to enlist Ross in the sister group The Primettes, which included Wilson, Florence Ballard and Betty McGlown.
In 1976, Billboard magazine named her the female entertainer of the century. In 1993, The Guinness Book Of World Records listed her as the most successful female artist ever (the title is now attributed to Madonna), partly due to her combined total of eighteen number-one singles, six of them recorded solo and the remaining dozen from her work with the Supremes.
Ross was also one of the few pop singers to find modest success in the acting world winning an Academy Award nomination for her role as Billie Holiday in the 1972 film, "Lady Sings the Blues" as well as having hits with other film roles such as "Mahogany", "Out of Darkness" and "Double Platinum", not to mention her role in "The Wiz".
Ross has been awarded many lifetime achievement accolades from many organizations and media outlets: she has been featured on BET, Soul Train, and awarded multiple times at the NAACP Image Awards, the Kennedy Center Honors in 2007 and given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement in 2011.
Ross' professional vocal collaborators have included the following during her career: Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Julio Iglesias, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Smokey Robinson, among many others.

You said you had the answer to it all
You never told me I'd take a fall
Mirror, mirror on the wall
You have turned my life
Into a paperback novel
Words that came to life
Chapter one: When I was young,
I came to you with my problems
Chapter two: You promised me
Love and anything that I desired
Tell me mirror, mirror,
Mirror on the wall
Thought you said
You had the answer to it all
Never told me
I was gonna take a fall
Tell me mirror, mirror,
Mirror on the wall
You have nailed my heart
Upon the wall for your pleasure
You have cast a spell
That cannot ever be broken
and now my eyes grow tired
I watch my picture getting older
But I remain the same
Trapped in this mirror forever.
Tell me mirror, mirror,
Mirror on the wall
Thought you said
You had the answer to it all
Never told me
I was gonna take a fall
Tell me mirror, mirror,
Mirror on the wall
I talk to you each night
and I follow your advice
You've been wrong
What's the price I have to pay
For this fairy tale thing called love
Let me go
Tell me mirror, mirror,
Mirror on the wall
Thought you said
You had the answer to it all
Never told me
I was gonna take a fall
Tell me mirror, mirror,
Mirror on the wall
The lyrics to Diana Ross's song Mirror Mirror speak to the idea of seeking guidance and validation from external sources, only to end up feeling betrayed and trapped. The song opens with the line "Mirror, mirror on the wall," evoking the imagery of the classic fairy tale Snow White and the evil queen who consults a magic mirror for guidance. However, in Ross's version, the mirror is not a source of empowerment or wisdom, but rather a symbol of deception and illusion.
Throughout the song, Ross laments the fact that the mirror promised her answers and solutions to her problems, but ultimately only led her to a "fall." She describes how the mirror has turned her life into a "melodrama," with each chapter of her story playing out like a paperback novel. The mirror has promised her love and everything she desires, but it is all a lie, as the mirror has "nailed [her] heart upon the wall for [its] pleasure."
The chorus of the song repeats the line "Never told me I was gonna take a fall," underscoring the idea that seeking external validation can be like walking blindly into a trap. The final verse, in which Ross declares that she wants to be released from the mirror's grip, emphasizes the theme of being trapped and controlled by external forces. Overall, Mirror Mirror is a cautionary tale about the dangers of seeking validation and guidance from external sources without questioning their motives.
