The Supremes were a hugely successful Motown all-female singing group active from 1959 until 1977, performing at various times doo-wop, pop, soul, Broadway showtunes, psychedelia and disco. Second only to The Beatles in terms of records sales and chart success, The Supremes were the most successful American musical act of the 1960s, delivering twelve #1 hits between 1964 and 1969, many of them written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland.
Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1959, The Supremes began as a quartet called The Primettes. Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglas public housing project in Detroit, were the sister act to The Primes (later The Temptations). In 1960, Barbara Martin replaced McGlown, and the group signed with Motown in 1961 as The Supremes.
Martin left at the end of 1961, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio. After they achieved success in 1964 with Ross as the lead singer, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross and the Supremes in 1967. Ballard left the group that same year because of personal differences and was replaced by Cindy Birdsong.
Diana Ross left the group for a history-making solo career in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell. After 1972, the lineup of The Supremes changed frequently, with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all becoming members before the group ended its eighteen-year existence in 1977.
Any Girl in Love

Yeah, knows what I'm going through
I've got an aching heart
Makes me cry sometimes
I've got an aching heart
Makes me cry sometimes
For every aching heart
'Cause when you lose the one you love
You lose your all and all
Any girl in love, ooh!
Yeah, knows what I'm going through
Any girl in love, ooh!
Yeah, knows what I'm going through
The way I miss your loving
Makes me cry sometimes
The way I miss your loving
Makes me cry sometimes
I gave you my love
In you I had no doubts
But as soon as love walked in
You walked right out
Any girl in love, ooh!
Yeah, knows what I'm going through
Any girl in love, ooh!
Yeah, knows what I'm going through
The way you hesitate to kiss me
Makes me cry sometimes
The way you never seem to miss me
Makes me cry sometimes
But I never bother
To wipe the tears from my face
'Cause I know another tear
Will fall in it's place
Any girl in love, ooh!
Yeah, knows what I'm going through
Any girl in love, ooh!
Yeah, knows what I'm going through
The song Any Girl in Love by Diana Ross and the Supremes speaks of the pain and heartbreak that comes with being in love and losing someone. The lyrics convey the emotions of the singer who has an aching heart and cries from missing the one that she loved and lost. The pain is not unique to her, as any girl in love can understand and relate to her situation. The singer acknowledges that tears must fall when you lose the one you love, and it feels like you lose your all and all.
The song then goes on to portray the unrequited love that the singer had for her lover. She gave him her love without any doubts, but as soon as love walked in, he walked right out. The singer further details the pain she feels due to the lack of reciprocation from her lover. The way he hesitates to kiss her or never seems to miss her makes her cry sometimes, but she doesn't bother to wipe the tears from her face because she knows another tear will fall in its place.
