Heartaches Don't Last Always
Diana Ross and the Supremes Lyrics

Tossin' and turnin' and losin' my sleep
Cause heartaches by the number you gave to me.
I'm so glad heartaches don't last always.
But I'm so glad heartaches don't last always.

I feel uplifted and at ease
Since my heartaches went away
Someway, somehow I've gotten over you now
No more sitting by the phone
Mo more wondering if you're alone

Tossin' and turnin' and losin' my sleep
Cause heartaches by the number you gave to me
I'm so glad heartaches don't last always
I'm so glad heartaches don't last always

Getting over you was hard cause we were so close.
In the middle of sweet memories and then it hurt the most.
But I just kept on trying in between crying and ...

Tossin' and turnin' and losin' my sleep
Cause heartaches by the number you gave to me
I'm so glad heartaches don't last always
I'm so glad heartaches don't last always.

How happy I am now that I'm over you.
It's so wonderful this change in me.
How rejoiced I am to be over you at last no more ...

Tossin' and turnin' and losin' my sleep
Cause heartaches by the number you gave to me

I'm so glad heartaches don't last always
I'm so glad heartaches don't last always

Overall Meaning

"Heartaches Don't Last Always" is a song that initially talks about the distress that a person undergoes after undergoing heartaches. In the first stanza, the singer is experiencing sleepless nights and sadness that has been caused by a partner who presented her with lots of heartaches. She is, however, relieved that heartaches do not last forever, thus looking forward to the time she will regain her peace.

The second stanza of the song talks about how the singer feels after overcoming the heartaches. She feels better now that she has re-gained her peace and is no longer stuck on the emotions that she had before. She no longer sits by the phone, waiting to hear from the partner, or trying to find out if they are alone. The singer was able to overcome the distress through the tough times, and now she is happy that she has gotten over the person who caused her pain.

The last stanza talks about how the singer feels afterward. Now that she has left her heartaches behind, she is filled with happiness, and she no longer experiences distress. The change is remarkable, and she is grateful that she has gotten past the heartaches. The chorus repeats that heartaches do not last always, and the singer sings how relieved she is that her heartaches didn't last forever.
