The Supremes were a hugely successful Motown all-female singing group active from 1959 until 1977, performing at various times doo-wop, pop, soul, Broadway showtunes, psychedelia and disco. Second only to The Beatles in terms of records sales and chart success, The Supremes were the most successful American musical act of the 1960s, delivering twelve #1 hits between 1964 and 1969, many of them written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland.
Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1959, The Supremes began as a quartet called The Primettes. Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglas public housing project in Detroit, were the sister act to The Primes (later The Temptations). In 1960, Barbara Martin replaced McGlown, and the group signed with Motown in 1961 as The Supremes.
Martin left at the end of 1961, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio. After they achieved success in 1964 with Ross as the lead singer, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross and the Supremes in 1967. Ballard left the group that same year because of personal differences and was replaced by Cindy Birdsong.
Diana Ross left the group for a history-making solo career in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell. After 1972, the lineup of The Supremes changed frequently, with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all becoming members before the group ended its eighteen-year existence in 1977.
I'll Try Something New

'Till it reaches the moon
I'll gather melodies from birdies that fly
And compose you a tune
Give you lovin' as warm as Mama's oven
And if that don't do
Then I'll try something new
I'll try something new
I will take you away with me as far as I can
To Venus or Mars
There we will love with your hand in my hand
You'll be king of the stars
Every day we can play on the Milky Way
And if that don't do
I'll have to try something new
I'll try something new
I will bring you a flower from the floor of the sea
To wear in your hair
(Thank you)
I'll do anything and every little thing to make you happy, boy
To show you that I care
I'll pretend I'm jealous of all the fellas
And if that don't do
Then I'll try something new
I'll try something new
The lyrics of "I'll Try Something New" by Diana Ross & The Supremes revolves around a woman expressing her unconditional love towards her partner. She promises to go to unprecedented lengths to keep her relationship alive, promising to build a castle with a tower so high that it reaches the moon, gathering melodies from birds to compose a tune, and providing endless love as warm as a mother's embrace. If that still isn't enough to keep their relationship afloat, she's willing to try something new.
The song talks about the lengths to which a person can go to save their relationship, from escaping to faraway destinations like Venus or Mars to pretend to be jealous of other men to make their partner feel more loved. This song showcases the importance of commitment and devotion in a relationship, where the person assures their partner that they will do whatever it takes to keep them happy, even if it means stepping outside their comfort zone.
Overall, "I'll Try Something New" is a testament to the lengths people can go to sustain a loving and fulfilling relationship. It shows that relationships require work and commitment, and that sometimes it takes trying something new to keep the fire burning.

Check out that Temptations harmony at the beginning, during Eddie's opening verse. Otis, on top, Dennis, at second, Paul at Baritone, Melvin holding down the bass line. The blending, and warm texture on the response "Fly, Fly-y-y-yyyy...." is classic Temps harmony. So sweet. Check it Out! Ciao!!!
