The Supremes were a hugely successful Motown all-female singing group active from 1959 until 1977, performing at various times doo-wop, pop, soul, Broadway showtunes, psychedelia and disco. Second only to The Beatles in terms of records sales and chart success, The Supremes were the most successful American musical act of the 1960s, delivering twelve #1 hits between 1964 and 1969, many of them written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland.
Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1959, The Supremes began as a quartet called The Primettes. Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglas public housing project in Detroit, were the sister act to The Primes (later The Temptations). In 1960, Barbara Martin replaced McGlown, and the group signed with Motown in 1961 as The Supremes.
Martin left at the end of 1961, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio. After they achieved success in 1964 with Ross as the lead singer, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross and the Supremes in 1967. Ballard left the group that same year because of personal differences and was replaced by Cindy Birdsong.
Diana Ross left the group for a history-making solo career in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell. After 1972, the lineup of The Supremes changed frequently, with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all becoming members before the group ended its eighteen-year existence in 1977.

Let's make life better together
How long does it take for you to make a difference
For someone who is passing by?
Only takes a second to give them a smile
And wave your and just and say, 'Hi'
Let's make life better together
Lookin' all around us
There's so much potential
A little hope could inspire
If we ignite the passion for all to desire
That little spark becomes a fire
Come on, let's do it
Let's make life better together
And build hope with joy and laughter
Let's celebrate this world that we share
The future needs us now to care
Let's do it
You heard it takes a village, it's quite essential
It gives a little child a chance
We are the village, no matter where you are
Someone will need help to stand
Come on, let's do it (together)
Let's make life better together
A nurse, a teacher, community leader
Anything that they dream of
Just show 'em that you love 'em
And make sure to tell 'em
There's nothing they can't rise above
Come on, let's do it (together)
Let's make life better together (together)
Come on, let's do it
Let's make life better together
And build hope with joy and laughter
Let's celebrate this world that we share
The future needs us now to care
Let's do it
Let's do it
A new day, a new hope, a new dream (a new dream)
A new beginning, the days ahead, I know are good and bright
And I know it'll be alright
Let's do it
Come on, let's do it
Let's make life better together
And build hope with joy and laughter
Let's celebrate this world that we share
The future needs us now to care
Let's do it
Let's do it
Let's do it
Let's do it
Let's do it
Let's do it
The lyrics of Diana Ross and the Supremes's song "Let It Be" underscore the importance of the communal aspect of life. The song is an invitation to embrace unity as a means of improving life, and a call to action: "Come on, let's do it (together)/ Let's make life better together." With the question, "How long does it take for you to make a difference," the song subtly suggests that individuals can make a positive impact by just being kind and considerate to others. A simple smile, wave, or hello can make all the difference to a passerby. The song suggests that by igniting the passion for hope and desire within all people's hearts, a little spark can become a flame that burns bright and inspires hope and unity.
The song also highlights the importance of working together as a community towards a common goal, declaring that "you heard it takes a village, it's quite essential." By espousing the idea of the village that raises and supports a child, the song encourages listeners to get involved in their communities, to be nurses, teachers, or community leaders, to be anything they dream of, to show love to others and to encourage them to rise above their struggles.
Overall, "Let It Be" preaches hope as an effective tool for building a better life for ourselves and for the world. By working together, embracing kindness, and taking care of each other, we can make the future brighter.
