The Supremes were a hugely successful Motown all-female singing group active from 1959 until 1977, performing at various times doo-wop, pop, soul, Broadway showtunes, psychedelia and disco. Second only to The Beatles in terms of records sales and chart success, The Supremes were the most successful American musical act of the 1960s, delivering twelve #1 hits between 1964 and 1969, many of them written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland.
Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1959, The Supremes began as a quartet called The Primettes. Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglas public housing project in Detroit, were the sister act to The Primes (later The Temptations). In 1960, Barbara Martin replaced McGlown, and the group signed with Motown in 1961 as The Supremes.
Martin left at the end of 1961, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio. After they achieved success in 1964 with Ross as the lead singer, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross and the Supremes in 1967. Ballard left the group that same year because of personal differences and was replaced by Cindy Birdsong.
Diana Ross left the group for a history-making solo career in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell. After 1972, the lineup of The Supremes changed frequently, with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all becoming members before the group ended its eighteen-year existence in 1977.
What the World Needs Now is Love

It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No not just for some but for everyone
Lord we don't need another mountain
There are mountains and hillsides
Enough to climb
Enough to cross. enough to last
'Till the end of time
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No not just for some but for everyone
Lord we don't need another meadow
There are corn fields and wheat fields
Enough to grow
There are sun beams and moon beams
Enough to shine
Oh listen Lord if you want to know
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
No not just for some but for everyone
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
What the world needs now is love, sweet love
What the world needs now...
The song "What the World Needs Now Is Love" by Diana Ross & The Supremes emphasizes the value of love in today's world. It's a song that touches the heart of everyone and encourages all to love each other, regardless of religion, color, or political affiliation. The song begins by emphasizing the lack of love in the world today, with the line "It's the only thing that there's just too little of." The lyrics suggest that love is the only solution to the world's problems, and it's something that should be given freely to everyone. It emphasizes that the world does not need another mountain, but rather, it needs love, sweet love.
The song also talks about how the world already has enough resources to make it a better place. With mountains, hillsides, oceans, and rivers, the world already has a lot to offer. But with love, it would be a world filled with peace and happiness. It calls upon the Lord to listen to the world's needs and provide love instead of unnecessary resources like meadows and fields.
"What the World Needs Now Is Love" spreads a significant social message that resonates with people even today. The song inspires us to spread the message of love and encourage others to do the same. The song is a reminder to all of us that we should all strive for a world filled with love, peace, and happiness.

I was only in primary school. It was 1968, there were the race riots in the USA & the news had just announced the death of Robert Kennedy. Then they played this & it had such a profound & powerful effect on me! I can NEVER forget THAT moment!

This version is what you call the Surpremes version Diana sang the way Mr Gordy wanted ,years later when Diana was on Broadway and won a Tony Award for her performances she had been interviewed by the Daily news which was when she got divorced and moved her Daughters to NY she was interviewed and said she went to a voice coach so she be able to sing louder and stronger for and Broadway and stayed away from the Motown vocal because Mr. Gordy had a control over almost every album she recorded according to Ashford and Simpson. Whatever they asked her to do she did, and they asked her to hold a note she did it, but she also went as she said to a vocal coach, so she’ll be able to handle Broadway and she did it and then before you know it she did the HBO special and that’s when she did some of her best, singing and especially when she did the free concert in New York City bravo, Miss Ross, also, I remember watching the Mike Douglas show years ago where years ago where Carol Bayer sager was asked how do you get some people singers to record your music? Well, we usually ask them personally, but we had many songs. We wanted Miss Diana Ross to sing, but we had to go through Berry Gordy, and he said no these are not songs for her that is where the break came from. She broke away from California, took her daughters to New York and decided to take over her career and make her own decisions and she did really well by doing that. This version is as I said a Supremes version. Her other version is on her Christmas album which is so much better.
