The Supremes were a hugely successful Motown all-female singing group active from 1959 until 1977, performing at various times doo-wop, pop, soul, Broadway showtunes, psychedelia and disco. Second only to The Beatles in terms of records sales and chart success, The Supremes were the most successful American musical act of the 1960s, delivering twelve #1 hits between 1964 and 1969, many of them written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland.

Founded in Detroit, Michigan in 1959, The Supremes began as a quartet called The Primettes. Founding members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Diana Ross, and Betty McGlown, all from the Brewster-Douglas public housing project in Detroit, were the sister act to The Primes (later The Temptations). In 1960, Barbara Martin replaced McGlown, and the group signed with Motown in 1961 as The Supremes.

Martin left at the end of 1961, and Ross, Ballard, and Wilson carried on as a trio. After they achieved success in 1964 with Ross as the lead singer, Motown president Berry Gordy renamed the group Diana Ross and the Supremes in 1967. Ballard left the group that same year because of personal differences and was replaced by Cindy Birdsong.

Diana Ross left the group for a history-making solo career in 1970 and was replaced by Jean Terrell. After 1972, the lineup of The Supremes changed frequently, with Lynda Laurence, Scherrie Payne, and Susaye Greene all becoming members before the group ended its eighteen-year existence in 1977.

This is still a Great song. What''s so sad is that some Radio Stations had literally thrown The Supremes not to the curb, but into rush hour traffic. When I first heard this song, I knew that it was going to be a major hit. I called many radio stations again and again. One radio station (WQAM) here in Miami continuously said they were waiting to see how this song takes across the country. Why wait,? Start the trend . Other stations claimed they did not have the song. Yeah Right!

Jean is the definition of quiet fire even if Smokey came up with the term. She has one of the prettiest and smoooooothest voices ever, yet the Sister could BURN; never one holla, not a scratch in her tone. After buying this album, I just knew this was going to be a Major Hit . Calls were constantly made to different radio stations, only to be greeted with excuses such as:" We don't have it song ", "Never heard of it" and finally the best excuse of all "'We're waiting to see if it takes across the Country" How Sad! This song is the Perfect example that Motown did not t kick The Supremes to the curb. Motown PROJECTED them into rush hour traffic, going in the opposite direction.

This track, Let Yourself Go ( with You Are The Heart of Me on the flip) all got out as 45s from "Mary, Scherrie & Susaye" but I thought the strongest cut was the defiant I Don't Want To Be Tied Down. No, the singing and the material was never going to be as great again as the H-D-H glory years, but this LP came out when I was 22 and livin' some honeymoon days ... so I'll never attack it. Still got the album too. :)

Some wonderful treasure hunter of this stuff needs to find us the "You Are The Heart of Me" performance from their Dinah Shore Show appearance (1976-77?) In it, Mary is wearing the diamond-studded skullcap she's seen in in the liner photos of the "High Energy" LP, and that she also wore to Florence's funeral. The song settles one question still kicked around in here to this day -- Mary COULD sing.

Great song. It is such a shame that Gordy allowed Wilson to manage this property. I truly believe that with skilled management The Supremes would still be as popular/current and singing today (I guess in a sense they are with FLOS)

Yes, I'd go with that up to a point. Flo was a potentially 'great' lead if she'd been encouraged/nurtured more but in terms of HDH 'hit' material it's difficult imagining anyone improving on Ross. Having said that there was an untapped catalogue of 'weightier', more blues/jazz tunes that Flo might have soared on.

I was bored to tears by their duet lp but I loved the cover picture and I think they are both killer singers.. Jean T.'s was better but not worthy of her amazing talent. Promotion and bad production are responsible for the failing popularity, probably all of Mary's BAD kharma din't help either.

So my ideal 60's LP would have consisted of... 6 leads from Diana, 4 from Flo and 2 from Mary. Though you often have to will her to make the note(!) Mary did have a pretty unique timbre.

The Supremes biggest liability was poor promotion but I agree American audiences are fickle esp, in R&B. If Richard Perry had taken them to Planet I bet they would have hit big. The Pointer's were an amazing & original live act though, esp in the early days as a foursome. Honeycomb and 3 Degrees were slightly more than one hit wonders although I do fully appreciate their music.

I think this should have been their first single when Sherrie joined the group. But I think Berry Gordy could've cared less about them once Diana left. No matter what they put out, it wouldn't have gotten promoted. This song should've been a hit.

How can you be a fan of The Supremes with comments like that? Mary was an ORIGINAL Supreme right along with La Ross and she deserves a lot of credit for being the only one who was there all the way through. Her solos, such as in "Floy Joy", are fine. She sang lead well, as did ALL 8 Supremes, come to think of it.

obviously! When Jean relieves Mary in Floy Joy it's like a calvery of rockin angels has come to the rescue. THAT's when the JOY part begins!!!! And thank GOD they didn't let Mary near Your Wonderful Sweet Love!!! Smokey let Mary sing that line solo as a favor to Diana who was still trying to promote her little tone-deaf buddy from the old days.

Scherrie is great as always. Susaye is a fine performer, but I never felt like she quite fit with the group. Mary is sort of all over the place as others have mentioned. It doesn't help that Scherrie and Susaye are much shorter and Mary was pregnant, making her look much bigger than the others. Not the best lineup visually, IMO, but the vocals are great, which is what really matters.

Speaking of Scherrie, I saw her at my job which is Homegoods home store in Woodland Hills, Ca like 2 months ago shopping with her family. A customer told me it was her and I didn't even reconize her. she was very nice and signed an autograph for them. I met her family a week later when they came back. I told them how I was a fan. They were impress and said 1 day they'll bring her back to meet me personally. MotownMaster your a lucky person to actually have 2 famous aunts including Freda Payne.

This was on the final Supremes album "Mary, Scherrie & Susaye". Also, I THINK Mary was pregnant with her SECOND child in the clip, her oldest son. She was pregnant with Turkessa on the cover of their 1975 album "The Supremes" which was about a year and a half before this, when Cindy Birdsong was still a member. Could be wrong, though...

@ivyfield -well, exactly. But that's what more-so distinguished The Supremes FROM the other groups. They did something different than the other ones' 'differents'! And it was extreme class, which THESE girls HAD! It's just that by this time, they had been sooo disrespected that they wanted soo much to be noticed for what they were....and even in reviews, it was stated that they came off like the 'shouters' at first. Mary Was Wild in this. But Susaye didn't know the steps always...

DON'T YOU DARE ATTACK JEAN TERRELL!!! The Jimmy Webb lp was an underrated masterpiece. The Supremes in Japan(only Jean and Syreeta sound "Wright" covering Diana's old numbers) lp is also wonderful! The Right ON tracks lp( despite those tacky wigs and sequined dresses-right in the middle of the Black Rights and Hippie Movements--no doubt Mary's idea) were also flawless. When they finally get their Afros on LOVE STAYS Jean also turned in winning performances on that wonderful concept lp!

I ain't trying to fight...just sharing. I seem to be the opposite of many. I find "Touch" to be such a sexy song. I really like the groove, but I just do not understand why people liked "Nathan Jones." I mean, I even turned a friend onto it, and she loves it. I just can't imagine that people could even dance to it back in the day. Just for the record,I really like the Supremes, and I think that Mary does really well on some stuff. I would love to hear more Cindy.

NO it isn't! They ALL were if you 'watch' closely! These were NEW routines. They were always learning new routines or adjustments and stuff, and it often left them out of sync, because they never got to 'KNOW' a routine well enough before it changed! TOO many hands in the pot working trying to bring them new ideas and things is the problem! Scherrie was the 'coolest' one about it, and she could be, because she was 'leading'! This was a 'chaotic' time for them.

I disagree. Though not nearly as charismatic or technically adroit as Ross, I love her sound and I think the 60's LP's would have benefitted if Mary & Flo had been given a few more leads. Not an equal split - Ross was definitely superior, but the gang vibe you get from seeing live clips would have benefited from a little more diversity.

It was still Jean and Sherry on 95% of the leads. Do you even own the post-Devine Diana Supremes material? Mary didn't even attend most of the Tops/ Supremes sessions;that was just the Tops(Levi) and Jean. Of course Mary was front and center for the album photos as always.

TRUTH! The NY back-up girls like Maretha Stewart, the Raelettes,The Jone's girls , the Waters etc were bad too. According to Motown insiders, Flo & Mary were the only Motown act incapable of learning to sing harmony and rarely if ever did. Their refrains are almost always echos of the melody laid down by LA ROSS. Surely Flo could have, but tone deaf Mary was the problem.

Mary wouldn't have earned the group one fan or hit if Berry would have been dumb enough to let her sing lead. She kicked Flo our and never invited her back during the seven yrs after Ross left! She blocked Syreeta too, who would've been great with Jean and Linda.

Nathan Jones was considered by Elton John and others to be one of the original disco songs. Touch is one of the most BORING songs ever, and I even tried to like it back in the day, before I learned about mary wilson's horns, tail and fangs.

that's what I'm sayin,best1. Nobody ever talks about how Mary put Diana to shame as the Queen Bitch of the Supremes. Diana was selfish and ambitious but Mary needs to be in prison for all her mean shit. Sherry Jamms on this. This is up there with the best of Ross and Terrell.

Actually Turkessa was born in '75...... (she's pregnant with her on the cover of the Supremes). This was the first boy..... can't recall his name!

Actually Mary was pregnant with her son Pedro (b.1977), Turkessa was born in 1975. she's clearly under-rehearsed, but then I guess that's only to be expected when 5 months pregnant.

yeah definitly caffeine involved or is a certain dynamic powder.... hehe you can even find it just backstage here...ok i'm the villain this time...but this is definitly not for children...look how wildly they moves...and that s good - i just imagine all the powerful feelings involved when you dance like that...it's full of sensation of freedom...specially in the 2nd part... a must say a more propulsive freedom...this make the difference with early 70s stuff with slower freedom kindofmoves

I believe that is Mary in the middle, pregnant with her first child Turkessa. I know that is Sheree Payne on the left, but I do not recognize that girl on the right. I lost track after Jean Terrell and Cindy Birdsong left.
