The Weight
Diana Ross and the Supremes with the Temptations Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I pulled in to Nazareth
Was feeling 'bout half past dead
I just need some place
Where I can lay my head
"Hey, mister, can you tell me, where a man might find a bed?"
He just grinned and shook my hand
And "No" was all he said
Take a load off Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny
And (and)
(You put the load right on me)

I picked up my bag
I went looking for a place to hide
I saw Carmen and the Devil walking side by side
I said "Hey Carmen, come on, let's go downtown?"
And she said, "I gotta go, but my friend can stick around"

And take a load off Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny
And, weight, right on me

Go down, Miss Moses, there's nothin' you can say
It's just ol' Luke, and Luke's waitin' on the Judgement Day
"Well, Luke, my friend, what about young Anna Lee?"
He said, "Do me a favor, son, won't ya stay and keep Anna Lee company?"

And take a load off Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny
And you put the load, yeah
(You put the load right on me)

Catch me a Cannonball, now, to take me down the line
My bag is sinkin' low and I do believe it's time
To get back to Miss Fanny, I know she's the only one
Who sent me here with her regards for everyone

Take a load off Fanny
Take a load for free, I say
Take a load off Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny
Take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny
Put the load right on me
Take a load, take a load, take a load for free
Take a load off Fanny
Put the weight on me

Take a load off Fanny
Take a load for free

Overall Meaning

The Weight is a song that tells a story of a weary traveler, who is looking for a place to rest. The song starts with the traveler pulling in to Nazareth, feeling half past dead, and just needing somewhere to lay his head. He asks a man if he can tell him where to find a bed, but the man just grins and shakes his hand, saying "no" was all he said. The song then goes on to describe the traveler's encounters with Carmen and the Devil, and Luke and Anna Lee, before he finally catches a Cannonball to take him down the line. Throughout the song, there is a recurring phrase "take a load off Fanny, take a load for free," which refers to the idea of sharing burdens and helping each other out.

The song is a collaboration between Diana Ross and the Supremes and The Temptations, two of the most successful and popular soul groups of the 1960s. The song was originally written and recorded by The Band in 1968, and it became a hit for both them and for Diana Ross and the Supremes with The Temptations. The collaboration between the two groups was part of a successful run of joint projects in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

I cannot believe how this great this tune was so neglected in its time, but how perfectly you captured the moment years later in your video. Thank you...I had saved your rendition for a couple years and glad i found it again today. Keep up the good work!

I like how they did "Funky Broadway" I never cared for this song no matter who sang it

@bryantparker7390

Not even the band version?

@manuelcampuzano558

Diana's way too high, she sounds better when she sings lower like on the early year and the TCB, and the Rodgers and Hart show.
