We Are Young

Give me a second I,
I need to get my story straight
My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire State
My lover he’s waiting for me just across the bar
My seat’s been taken by some sunglasses asking bout a scar, and

I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you’re trying to forget
But between the drinks and subtle things
The holes in my apologies, you know
I’m trying hard to take it back
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I’ll carry you home

Tonight, we are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

Tonight, we are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

Now I know that I'm not all that you got, I guess that I
I just thought maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
But our friends are back
So let's raise a cup
'Cause I found someone to carry me home

Tonight, we are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun

Tonight, we are young (we are young)
So let’s set the world on fire (fire)
We can burn brighter than the sun (Whoa)

Carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
Just carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
Carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)
Just carry me home tonight (Na na na na na na)

The world is on my side
I have no reason to run
So will someone come and carry me home tonight

The angels never arrived
But I can hear the choir
So will someone come and carry me home

Tonight, we are young
So let’s set the world on fire
We can burn brighter than the sun (We are young, yeah)

Tonight, we are young (we are young)
So let’s set the world on fire (fire)
We can burn brighter than the sun

So if by the time the bar closes

And you feel like falling down
I’ll carry you home tonight

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of "We Are Young" by Fun. (featuring Janelle Monae) speaks of a man at a bar, reminiscing and regretful about something he did in the past with someone he loved. The man acknowledges his mistakes and apologizes for them, but understands that it may be too late to make things right. He is surrounded by his friends who are drinking and getting high in the bathroom, but he remains sober, seeking the opportunity to make things right with his former lover. He is hoping that by the end of the night, he will be able to carry her home and spend the night together just like old times. The chorus of the song is a call to seize the moment and live it up because tonight, they are young and they can set the world on fire. This chorus, which is repeated throughout the song, is an invitation to enjoy life and make the most of the present.

In the second stanza, the man recognizes that he is not everything that his lover needs, but he has found someone to "carry him home" just like he wants to carry her home. Finally, as the night progresses, the man realizes that he may not have his former lover with him, but he is surrounded by his friends who are willing to go out and have a good time with him. The song ends with the man realizing that everything is okay even if his former lover does not return to him, and he is still surrounded by good company.
