Dianne came from a very musical family. Her father, who died when she was two years old, was also a singer. Her mother, Vada Swanson, played trumpet. A cousin, George Duke is a well known piano and keyboard player and producer.
Dianne and her sister Sharon were raised by their grandmother in Denver, Colorado. As a child Dianne took piano lessons and sang at every opportunity. When she was 11 years old her interest in music was enhanced by an inspiring teacher who thought that music was the best way to bring students together. Dianne discovered a love of music and that she wanted to be a singer.
Her uncle, Charles Burell, a bass player with the Denver Symphony Orchestra, introduced her to the music of jazz singers, from Ella Fitzgerald to Billie Holiday. She was especially impressed by Sarah Vaughan.
1974
At the age of sixteen she was singing at the George Washington Highschool in Denver, in a highschool bigband. That same year the band played at a music festival (Convention of the National Association of Jazz Educators). Her Band won first place and it was there she met the trumpeter Clark Terry, who after discovering her became her mentor.
1975
A year later she began studying music at the University of Denver, before she moving in 1976 to Los Angeles. In L.A. her interest in Latin-American music grew, and she began experimenting with different kinds of vocal music and finally decided to pursue a career as a singer. She met Eduardo del Barrio, and she toured with his group "Caldera" and sang in Billy Child's jazz band "Night Flights". Later she tour with Sergio Mendes.
From 1983 until 1986 she toured with Harry Belafonte as a lead singer. This period saw her first experiences with world music. In 1987 she became the first vocalist to sign with Blue Note records. She moved back to Denver from Los Angeles in 1992. She sang at the closing ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City.

After Hours
Dianne Reeves Lyrics

While the whole town is sleeping
I find my heart keeping a rendezvous
With the ghost of you
After hours
Haunting all the old places
I ask the same faces
It's the same old blues
Someday somewhere
I'll find you
And I'll keep searching till then
Knowing that when I find you
I'll start living again
So to bed
Though my vigil is ending
I'll still keep pretending
You're with me the rest of my days
For I'll keep loving you
After hours and always
I'll keep loving you
After hours and always
Someday somewhere
I'll find you
And I'll keep searching till then
Knowing that when I find you
I'll start living again
So to bed
Though my vigil is ending
I'll still keep pretending
You're with me the rest of my days
I'll keep loving you
After hours and always
I'll keep loving you
After hours and always
For days and hours and always
The lyrics of After Hours by Dianne Reeves are a poignant expression of yearning, heartbreak and the hope for reunion. The song revolves around the idea of keeping a rendezvous with the memory of a past lover, who is now absent. The singer explains how during the hours when the entire town is sleeping, she finds her heart keeping a rendezvous with the ghost of the person she once loved. The haunting imagery of the lyrics emphasizes the loneliness and emptiness that the singer feels in the absence of her lover. The same sentiment is echoed in the next verse where the singer mentions haunting all the old places while asking the same faces for any news. The lyrics are a powerful illustration of how heartbreak can leave a person yearning for the past and wandering through memory lane in search of a vestige of what once was.
The chorus, meanwhile, gives us an insight into the singer's psyche. She reveals that she will keep searching for her past love until she finds them - indicating that even though the past love is gone, she has not lost hope of a reunion. The final verse illustrates the singer's resolve to keep loving her past love. Even though she is aware that they might never reunite, she accepts the possibility and chooses to love them after hours and always, for days and hours and always. Overall, the lyrics paint a vivid picture of a heart that yearns for love that seems lost.

After hours
Late at night when everyone else is asleep
While the whole town is sleeping
At a time when everyone is in deep slumber
I find my heart keeping a rendezvous
My heart is yearning to meet you
With the ghost of you
With the echo of your memory
Haunting all the old places
Visiting all the places where we spent time together
I ask the same faces
I reach out to the same people who knew you
For any news
If they can tell me anything about you
It's the same old blues
But it only brings me down and makes me feel blue
Someday somewhere
One day, somewhere in this world
I'll find you
I'll finally find you
And I'll keep searching till then
Until I find you, I will keep searching
Knowing that when I find you
Because I know that when I find you
I'll start living again
I'll feel alive and complete once again
So to bed
It's time for me to go to sleep
Though my vigil is ending
Even though my watchful waiting is coming to an end
I'll still keep pretending
But I will continue pretending
You're with me the rest of my days
That you're still with me in my heart for the rest of my life
For I'll keep loving you
Because I will always continue to love you
After hours and always
Late at night and always
For days and hours and always
Every day, every hour, and always
