Adrian Hates was originally a classically trained guitarist and pianist, and subsequently bassist of Garden of Delight. He initiated the Diary of Dreams project in the late 1980s, taking the name from one of his early classical guitar compositions, 'Tagebuch der Träume'. The first album, 'Cholymelan', appeared in 1994 on the Dion Fortune label.
Encouraged by this success, Adrian formed his own label Accession and released a string of albums over the following years, building a loyal fanbase each step of the way. The second album 'End of Flowers' was released in 1996, expanding on the darkwave sound of the debut. 'Bird Without Wings' followed a year later, whilst the more experimental work 'Psychoma?' arrived in 1998.
The first sign of consolidation came in 1999, when a compilation album 'Moments of Bloom' appeared, containing two reworked tracks from each album. The next two albums 'One of 18 Angels' and 'Freak Perfume' (plus its companion EP 'PaniK Manifesto') made greater use of electronic rhythms, resulting in greater club play and wider recognition for the band.
Their 2004 'Nigredo' (a concept album inspired by a mythology the band designed themselves) saw a move back towards the more subtle, sparse concepts of old, but still featuring bursts of their more recent, dance-oriented sound. Songs from the Nigredo tour were later released on the live CD 'aLive' and the companion DVD 'Nine In Numbers'. The next Diary of Dreams album 'Nekrolog 43' was released in 2007, offering a greater variety of moods and concepts than previous works. Adrian Hates claims to be influenced, both lyric wise and artwork wise, by the German 1909-1935 expressionism and the "beauty of ugliness" in the course of his work.
The ninth album entitled "(if)" was released on March 13, 2009.

Winter
Diary of Dreams Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Above the sky, blood-red i turn to stone
I want to move i want to move
I want to move
My hope, my belief my pain, my sorrow
So uncertain so uncertain
Winter's decay winter's decay
Winter's decay
The lyrics of 'Winter' by Diary of Dreams are an embodiment of dark, evocative imagery and a melancholic mood that is prevalent throughout the song. The words are carefully chosen and beautifully crafted to reflect on themes of betrayal, solitude, and despair. The opening lines of the song, "I would not dare to blame you, I wouldn't dare too much," set the tone for the rest of the lyrics that follow. They express the persona's fear of confronting the subject of the song, revealing vulnerability and a sense of lack of control. The persona's plea for 'pity' and the touch of the subject of the song are symbolic of a search for any kind of human connection, in a world where the persona feels alienated.
The second stanza of the song is notable for its metaphorical language. The 'faces made of stone' are described as 'angels' that the persona feels are neglected by the throne of the subject of the song. The angels are isolated in their despair, unknown to one another, and betrayed by the eyes of the one they worship. The persona's emotions are evident as he tries to paint a picture of this desolate world, highlighting the subjects' abandonment of responsibility.
The chorus's lines, "Winter souls regain their powers, to multiply the pain in you," are the most powerful in the song. The reference to winter symbolizes the dark, cold, and desolate landscape of the persona's mind. The persona seeks to remind the subject of the song of his destiny and the consequences of his actions. The final stanza of the song is the persona's attempt to lull the subject to sleep, echoing the persona's loneliness and his ultimate acceptance of his fate. The lyrics of 'Winter' are haunting and full of emotions that will resonate with anyone who has felt lost or alone.

I would not dare to blame you
I am not willing to accuse you
I wouldn't dare too much
I am reluctant to put too much blame on you
I only ask for pity
I am requesting a little compassion from you
So these faces feel your touch Upon their skin
So that these neglected souls can feel your attention on them
My eyes see many faces
I see countless faces
Many faces made of stone
But these faces appear emotionless
I figure they are angels
I assume they are heavenly beings
All neglected by your throne
Yet, you have abandoned them
Deserted as lifeform
They are forsaken as living entities
Between heaven, between hell
In-between realms of heaven and hell
Unknown to one another
They are unfamiliar with each other
They know your eyes betray their spell
But they are aware that your gaze exposes their illusion
Down from heaven where you hide
You come down from your hidden place in heaven
You have demented all your pride
You have destroyed all your self-esteem
O' give these faces holy glance
Please pay attention to these forgotten souls
Back their monumental trance
Bring them back from their stupor
Your anger and your rage still silent
Your fury and wrath are still concealed
As I provoke that weakness too
As I urge you to reveal that vulnerability too
So byouti-full, out of control
You are stunning, yet unruly
Your temper now is overwhelming
Your anger is now overpowering
Is this the place you're born for?
Is this where you belong?
Is this the last frontier?
Is this the final boundary?
Is this the world we fight for?
Is this the world we are struggling for?
Is this our sense of creed?
Is this our belief system?
Winter souls regain their powers
These wintery souls are regaining their strengths
To multiply the pain in you
To intensify your suffering
Winter souls greed to bear silence
These wintry souls desire to remain quiet
To take away all life from you!
To deprive you of all living things
And as I lay your head to sleep
And as I put you to bed
Silences echoes in your greed
Quietness resonates in your selfishness
