I remember when this song debut on WJIZ in Albany Georgia in 1973 I think. I was just 13 years old then, but remember how I couldn't help but moving to the beat. Truly one of the most inspiring songs in my life. I somehow could feel the African in me " if that makes sense". And at 61 years old I still can't help but dance when I hear this song. I never knew that Manu was from Cameroon!!!!! I was 2 years old when this song came out. I always went crazy (as everybody did at the time) when this banger played on the radio. Back then before there was anything such as a Google Search I was told that Manu was from Zimbabwe and I always believed it without any verification to tell me otherwise. I recently got my African ancestry DNA results and found that my mother's DNA lineage is in Cameroon. It"s not an epic realization but a great coincidence for me. Now I'm gonna bop this s!*t even harder.

"Soul Makossa" was a 1972 song sung by the talented African artist Manu Dibango. It was a jazz fusion and funk oriented song which became very popular in many countries all over the world. I was a little boy when I first heard it being played here on the local MW radio channel in the 70's, and I liked this song very much ever since. I am living in South Asia. This was one of the dance tunes which is quite unforgettable.
It is a known fact that Michael Jackson got inspiration from this song to create his song "Wanna be Startin' Something". It is sad to know that Mr. Manu Dibango passed away in 2020.

Manu Dibango used to say that Michael Jackson had not been fair enough with him, as this was plagerized by the latter in the first song "Wanna be starting Somethin", the opening tube of his magnum album "Thriller", released in 1982, and which is still to date the world most sold album...Manu released his "Soul Makossa" in 1972, as the hymn to the African Cup of Nation, a football event that Cameroon, his country, was hosting in 1972...so this song as just strike 50 years...had Manu its author not passed away last year due to Covid, he would certainly had celebrated it at the opening of the last African Cup...help in January in Cameroon! In brand new stadium, just as in 1972 Cameroon had just got its first stadium!

Ah yes, the good old days of radio. WNEW "FM", WPLJ,and of course WBLS. There was a late night DJ on wnew Roscoe I think his name was,I probably spelled it wrong but I used to listen to that all the time. I really miss that, it's been over 30 years since I lived there

OMG !!! I absolutely Love this song. I was a 14 when I first heard it on the radio Mom had in the kitchen. Mom loved to dance and whenever this song came on the radio she'd STOP whatever she was doing and start dancing, and I would join her. DJ's in those days would say the name of the song and the Artist, so on Fridays Dad gat paid and gave me my allowance of $1.00 I ran to the record store eight blocks aways and purchased the 45 it was only .25 cents. Yes, this was almost 50 years ago. I'm now 64 still have that 45 in excellent conditions.... I collect records and have a record library in my home. Music has always been my passion but, it was SOUL MAKOSSA By Manu Dibango that put me on this Path. SOUL MAKOSSA was my Inspiration. And when I turned 31 my husband and I went to visit Beautiful Africa Vacation. I love this country.
