Dick Haymes (September 13, 1918 – March 28, 1980) was one of the most popular American male vocalists of the 1940s and early 1950s.
He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His Irish-born mother, Marguerite Haymes (1894-1987), was a well-known vocal coach and instructor. He became the vocalist in a number of big bands, worked in Hollywood on radio and in many films throughout the forties and fifties.

Years later (1955), this act of his nearly caused his deportation to Argentina on an unrelated technicality in immigration law. During World War II, he was briefly detained at Ellis Island.
Haymes was married six times and had six children. His most famous marriages were to film actresses Joanne Dru (1941-1949) and Rita Hayworth (1953-1955). His daughter Stephanie Haymes was married to Sir Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin
He died in Los Angeles from lung cancer, at the age of 61.
A Sinner Kissed An Angel
Dick Haymes Lyrics

One night perfect for romancing,
The night a sinner kissed an angel,
He wanted thrills, she wanted love,
Oh but his sighs were tender
As he begged her to surrender,
The night a sinner kissed an angel,
How was she to know that every lovely vow
Was part of the game he was playing,
But to his surprise he realized
Somehow he meant every word he was saying.
Yes, miracles can happen,
I know 'cause I saw what happened
That night a sinner kissed an angel,
That was the night I fell in love.
The lyrics to Dick Haymes's song A Sinner Kissed An Angel tells the story of a sinner who kissed an angel on a perfect night for love and romance. The sinner wanted thrills while the angel wanted love. Their connection is described as tender sighs and surrender. She believed it was love, not realizing that it was all part of the game he was playing until he surprised himself by realizing he meant every word he was saying. The song concludes by stating that miracles can happen, as the author saw it for himself the night a sinner kissed an angel, and that was the night he fell in love.
The lyrics evoke a sense of passion, naivete, and innocence. The metaphor of the sinner and angel reflects two characters contrasting in nature, and yet they are drawn to one another. The song captures the essence of how love can transform a person and bring them to a new understanding of themselves.
