Dick Haymes (September 13, 1918 – March 28, 1980) was one of the most popular American male vocalists of the 1940s and early 1950s.
He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His Irish-born mother, Marguerite Haymes (1894-1987), was a well-known vocal coach and instructor. He became the vocalist in a number of big bands, worked in Hollywood on radio and in many films throughout the forties and fifties.
He never became a United States citizen and avoided military service during World War II by asserting his non-belligerent status as a citizen of Argentina, which was neutral. Years later (1955), this act of his nearly caused his deportation to Argentina on an unrelated technicality in immigration law. During World War II, he was briefly detained at Ellis Island.
Haymes was married six times and had six children. His most famous marriages were to film actresses Joanne Dru (1941-1949) and Rita Hayworth (1953-1955). His daughter Stephanie Haymes was married to Sir Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin
He died in Los Angeles from lung cancer, at the age of 61.

Wasn't that a dream last night?
Seems I barely closed my eyes and you were there
By the way,
And to my complete surprise,
You and I were dancing on a cloud somewhere
I held you in my arms,
And then I pleaded for a kiss
And you were willing
And, so we kissed,
Then I heard you say you cared,
By the way, do say it now as you did then,
Or must I wait until I dream again?
And then I pleaded for a kiss
And you were willing
And, so we kissed,
Then I heard you say you cared,
By the way, do say it now as you did then,
Or must I wait until I dream again?
The lyrics to Dick Haymes's song "By The Way" seem to describe a dream where the singer is reunited with someone they care deeply for. The dream is so vivid that the singer believes it to be real, and they are shocked to find themselves dancing with the person they've been missing. The moment is electric, and the singer revels in the joy of the moment.
The song continues as the singer describes their intense longing for this person, even imagining that they are now in love. The dream has become so real that the singer can't help but ask if the person they love feels the same. They ask if the declaration of love they heard in the dream was real or if they have to wait until the next dream to hear it again.
Overall, the song is a powerful exploration of the line between dreams and reality in matters of the heart. It speaks to the intense longing we can feel for someone, even imagining them into our dreams, and the longing to know if that love is reciprocated.

Wasn't that a dream last night?
Do you remember that dream I had last night?
Seems I barely closed my eyes and you were there
It felt like I just closed my eyes and you appeared in my dream
And to my complete surprise,
To my surprise, something even more unexpected happened
You and I were dancing on a cloud somewhere
In my dream, we were literally dancing on a cloud
I held you in my arms,
In the dream, I held you in a comforting embrace
The joy of it was thrilling
It brought me immense joy
And then I pleaded for a kiss
I asked for a kiss
And you were willing
And you were happy to oblige
And, so we kissed,
We shared a passionate kiss
Then I heard you say you cared,
After the kiss, you told me you cared for me
By the way, do say it now as you did then,
Can you tell me you care for me now, just like you did in my dream?
Or must I wait until I dream again?
Or do I have to wait for another dream to hear you say that again?
