I Guess I'll Have To Dream The Rest
Dick Haymes Lyrics

I guess I'll to dream the rest
If you can't remember the things that you said
The night that my shoulder held your sleepy head
If you believe that parting's best,
I guess I'll have to dream the rest.
I guess I'll have to dream alone
Of honeymoon cruises once dear to my heart,
Of one room apartments that we said we'd start
Of foolish things we planned to own,
I guess I'll have to dream alone.
I can see that your heart has gone astray,
As for me, I love you the same old way.
I guess I'll have to dream the rest,
There'll be no friends waiting to throw shoes and rice
Those heavenly moments will never come twice

I'm thankful for the hours you've blessed,
I guess I'll have to dream the rest.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dick Haymes's song "I Guess I'll Have To Dream The Rest" tells the story of a lover who is left alone after their partner has decided to part ways. The singer is left with only the memories of the love they shared and the plans they made for their future. The first two lines refer to the night when the singer's partner rested their head on their shoulder and shared their deepest thoughts, but now those memories are fading away. The singer is left to fantasize about what could have been and what they had hoped for in a relationship.

The third and fourth lines suggest that the departure of the partner is final, and the singer is left to dream alone of the plans they made together. The longing that the singer feels is emphasized with the mention of "one-room apartments" and "foolish things we planned to own." The singer is consumed by nostalgia and is forced to acknowledge that these are things they will never experience together.

The final lines of the song suggest that the singer is resigned to their fate. Although they are grateful for the time they spent with their partner, they are now left to "dream the rest." They will never have the chance to experience the perfect moments of love and romance again.

Overall, "I Guess I'll Have To Dream The Rest" is a poignant love song about the wistful longing for the past and the things that might have been.

It's interesting that at this point in his career, TD decided to revisit some of the songs he recorded for RCA Victor during Sinatra's tenure as male vocalist. Dick was placed in the unenviable position of being compared with Sinatra, yet again -- the first time was when he replaced Ol' Blue Eyes in '42 -- but he manages to put his own stamp on the material. Mr. Haymes captures all the sad ruefulness in this beauty.
