Dick Haymes (September 13, 1918 – March 28, 1980) was one of the most popular American male vocalists of the 1940s and early 1950s.
He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His Irish-born mother, Marguerite Haymes (1894-1987), was a well-known vocal coach and instructor. He became the vocalist in a number of big bands, worked in Hollywood on radio and in many films throughout the forties and fifties.
He never became a United States citizen and avoided military service during World War II by asserting his non-belligerent status as a citizen of Argentina, which was neutral. Years later (1955), this act of his nearly caused his deportation to Argentina on an unrelated technicality in immigration law. During World War II, he was briefly detained at Ellis Island.
Haymes was married six times and had six children. His most famous marriages were to film actresses Joanne Dru (1941-1949) and Rita Hayworth (1953-1955). His daughter Stephanie Haymes was married to Sir Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin
He died in Los Angeles from lung cancer, at the age of 61.
It's a Grand Night for Singing
Dick Haymes Lyrics

The moon is flying high,
And somewhere a bird
Who is bound he'll be heard
Is throwing his heart at the sky!
It's a grand night for singing,
The stars are bright above.
And to add to the show,
I think I am falling in love!
Falling, falling in love.
[Chorus]
It's a grand night for singing,
The moon is flying high,
And somewhere a bird
Who is bound he'll be heard,
Is throwing his heart at the sky!
Maybe it's more than the moon,
Maybe it's more than the birds,
Maybe it's more than sight of the night,
In a light too lovely for words.
Maybe it's more than the earth
Shiny in silvery blue.
Maybe the reason I'm feeling this way
Has something to do with you!
[Chorus]
It's a grand night for singing,
The stars are bright above.
The earth is a-glow
And, to add to the show
I think I am falling in love!
Falling, falling in love!
Margie and Pat:
It's a grand night for singing,
The moon is flying high,
And somewhere a bird
Who is bound he'll be heard,
Is throwing his heart at the sky!
[Chorus]
The lyrics to Dick Haymes's song "It's a Grand Night for Singing" celebrate the beauty of a magical evening. The song captures the essence of a perfect night when everything is in harmony. The opening line, "It's a grand night for singing," sets the tone for the song. The moon is high in the sky, and a bird is singing its heart out. The song conveys a sense of joyousness and wonder.
The second verse delves deeper into what makes the night special. The stars are bright in the sky, and the earth seems to glow. These natural phenomena add to the captivating show of the night. However, the singer acknowledges that the reason he is feeling so overwhelmed may have something to do with someone else. The third verse suggests the possibility of a romantic connection, as the singer wonders if his feelings for someone are contributing to the extraordinary night. The song concludes with a repeat of the chorus to reinforce the song's theme of a night made for singing and falling in love.
