Dick Haymes (September 13, 1918 – March 28, 1980) was one of the most popular American male vocalists of the 1940s and early 1950s.
He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His Irish-born mother, Marguerite Haymes (1894-1987), was a well-known vocal coach and instructor. He became the vocalist in a number of big bands, worked in Hollywood on radio and in many films throughout the forties and fifties.
He never became a United States citizen and avoided military service during World War II by asserting his non-belligerent status as a citizen of Argentina, which was neutral. Years later (1955), this act of his nearly caused his deportation to Argentina on an unrelated technicality in immigration law. During World War II, he was briefly detained at Ellis Island.
Haymes was married six times and had six children. His most famous marriages were to film actresses Joanne Dru (1941-1949) and Rita Hayworth (1953-1955). His daughter Stephanie Haymes was married to Sir Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin
He died in Los Angeles from lung cancer, at the age of 61.

Of the tom-tom;
When the jungle shadows fall,
Like the tick, tick, tock
Of the stately clock,
As it stands against the wall,
Like the drip, drip, drip,
Of the raindrops,
So a voice within me
Keeps repeating,
You, you, you
Night and day
You are the one,
Only you
Beneath the moon
And under the sun.
Whether near to me or far,
It's no matter,
Darling, where you are
I think of you
Night and day.
Day and night
Why is it so,
That this longing for you follows
Where-ever I go?
In the roaring traffic's boom,
In the silence of my lonely room,
I think of you,
Night and day.
Night and day
Under the hide of me
There's an
Oh, such a hungry yearning,
Burning inside of me.
And its torment won't be through
Til you let me spend my life
Making love to you,
Day and night,
Night and day.
The lyrics "Night and Day" by Dick Haymes describe a love that is all-encompassing, unrestrained by proximity or time. The first verse creates a metaphor between the love for the person and the sounds that surround the singer. The repetitive beats of the tom-tom, the ticking of the clock, and the drip of raindrops all reinforce the idea that the intensity of the love for that one person is all-encompassing and persistent. The second verse deepens the emotional depth of the relationship as the singer talks about how this longing for the person follows them wherever they go, in the bustle of city life or in solitary moments. The final verse describes the intensity of the desire for this person. It cannot be quenched until the person allows the singer to spend their life making love to them, both day and night.
Overall, the song has a powerful emotional resonance, describing a love that is deep, intense, and all-consuming. The metaphorical language used in the lyrics creates a vivid picture of the love between the two people, highlighting the way it permeates the moments of everyday life.

Like the beat, beat, beat,
Of the tom-tom;
Just like the constant and steady beating of a tom-tom drum,
When the jungle shadows fall,
When the shadows of the jungle appear after sundown,
Like the tick, tick, tock
Of the stately clock,
As it stands against the wall,
Similar to the slow and methodical ticking of a grand clock as it hangs on the wall,
Like the drip, drip, drip,
Of the raindrops,
When the summer show'r is through;
Like the sound of raindrops falling one after the other, once a summer rain has come to an end,
So a voice within me
Keeps repeating,
You, you, you
A voice inside my head echoes the word you, you, you,
Night and day
You are the one,
Regardless of what time of day or night it may be, you are the only one I think of,
Only you
Beneath the moon
And under the sun.
Day or night, you are the sole person beneath the moon and under the sun I think of,
Whether near to me or far,
It's no matter,
Darling, where you are
I think of you
Night and day.
Regardless of the distance between us, it doesn't matter, darling, where you are, as I will still think of you night and day.
Day and night
Why is it so,
That this longing for you follows
Where-ever I go?
Why do I long for you so much that it follows me anywhere, day or night?
In the roaring traffic's boom,
In the silence of my lonely room,
I think of you,
Night and day.
Whether it's the bustle of traffic around me or the quietude of my lonely room, I cannot help but think of you night and day.
Night and day
Under the hide of me
There's an
Oh, such a hungry yearning,
Burning inside of me.
Inside of me, a strong craving is burning and yearning for you, day and night.
And its torment won't be through
Til you let me spend my life
Making love to you,
Day and night,
Night and day.
