When the world is cold,
I will feel a glow just thinking of you
And the way you look tonight.
Yes you're lovely, with your smile so warm
And your cheeks so soft,
There is nothing for me but to love you,
With each word your tenderness grows,
Tearing my fear apart
And that laugh that wrinkles your nose,
It touches my foolish heart.
Lovely, never, ever change.
Keep that breathless charm.
Won't you please arrange it?
Cause I love you
Just the way you look tonight.
Mm, mm, mm, mm,
Just the way you look tonight
The lyrics of "The Way You Look Tonight" by Dick Haymes are a beautiful and romantic tribute to the beauty of a special someone who makes life worth living even on the coldest, darkest days. The singer sets the scene of a future moment when he might feel low and the whole world feels like a cold and miserable place. But in that moment, just thinking about the person he loves and the way they look fills him with a glow that brings joy to his heart. The lyrics throughout are full of tender adoration and a deep appreciation for the special qualities that make the person so perfect for the singer.
The second verse brings our focus to the person's smile and soft cheeks, adding to the reason the singer loves them so much. Each word they speak seems to add to the sweetness of the moment, making it all the more magical. As the person laughs and wrinkles their nose, the singer's heart is touched deeply. The bridge of the song reaches a climax with the singer's plea that the person never change, that they might always have that magical charm that won their heart in the first place. The final repetition of the chorus reinforces just how perfect the singer believes the person to be, emphasizing their beauty in a way that echoes the opening and closing lines.
